The Barrens is an expansive, sun-baked savanna that serves as the beating geographical and logistical heart of the Horde in central Kalimdor. Once a verdant forest prior to the Great Sundering, it is now an arid plain of red dust, hardy scrub, and wandering wildlife. Centered around the strategic hub of the Crossroads, the land remains locked in constant struggle against quilboar tribes, centaur raiders, and creeping corruption.

For countless generations, nomadic tauren hunted kodo and zhevra across these plains while waging a defensive, cyclical war against marauding Kolkar centaur. When Thrall led the orcs to Kalimdor during the Third War, he aided Cairne Bloodhoof in repelling the centaur and traversing the savanna into Mulgore. Today, the Barrens connects Durotar, Mulgore, and Ashenvale. Outposts like the Crossroads and Camp Taurajo secure trade along the Gold Road, while orcish homesteads brave the arid climate to forge a lasting home.
