Durotar

The story

Durotar is the arid, red-rock homeland founded by Warchief Thrall following the Third War, named in honor of his father, Durotan. Bounded by the Southfury River and the Great Sea, it serves as the heartland of the New Horde and the proving ground for young orcs and Darkspear trolls. Within its harsh canyons lie fortified settlements like Razor Hill, the sprawling warrior city of Orgrimmar, and entrenched hostile holdouts ranging from quilboar tribes to stranded Alliance troops.

When Thrall led his people across the Great Sea to Kalimdor, he deliberately sought an untamed frontier where the orcs could carve out an honest existence through labor and grit rather than conquest. Durotar's cracked red soil, baked gullies, and towering red-rock spires remind the orcs deeply of Draenor before its destruction. While the climate is unforgiving, offering little arable land and sparse water, the Horde embraced the landscape's natural defense and austere majesty. Bordered to the west across the Southfury River by the open Barrens and to the north by the ruined wilderness of Azshara, Durotar stands as living proof that the orcs have forged their own destiny.

Questions, answered

Why did Thrall settle the Horde in such a barren desert?

Thrall chose this unforgiving territory intentionally. The red earth and rugged mesas reminded the orcs of their ancestral world of Draenor, while its harsh conditions served as penance and a forge for discipline. Thrall believed his people needed to earn their survival through honest hardship rather than claiming fertile lands by conquest, ensuring they would not slide back into bloodthirsty complacency.

Who was Durotar named after?

The land was named in honor of Durotan, Thrall's late father and the former chieftain of the Frostwolf clan. Durotan had opposed the demonic corruption of the orcish clans and was murdered on the orders of the warlock Gul'dan.

Why are there human soldiers inside Tiragarde Keep?

The soldiers at Tiragarde Keep are surviving Kul Tiran marines under Lieutenant Benedict, left over from Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore's invasion fleet. Even after Proudmoore was slain, these troops refused to surrender or withdraw, maintaining an entrenched hostile outpost right on Durotar's southern coast.

What is the conflict on the Echo Isles?

The Darkspear trolls originally established their Kalimdor home on the Echo Isles. However, a powerful witch doctor named Zalazane succumbed to madness and turned his dark magic against his brethren, enslaving their minds. The survivors fled to the mainland to establish Sen'jin Village, from which they launch raids to break his hold.

What is the Burning Blade doing in Durotar?

The Burning Blade is a subversive demonic cult loyal to the Shadow Council and the Burning Legion. Operatives lurk in secluded spots like Skull Rock and the Burning Blade Coven, attempting to undermine Thrall's leadership and tempt impressionable orcs back into demonic servitude.

What connects Durotar to other regions?

A bridge over the Southfury River leads west into the Barrens, while a path through northern Orgrimmar crosses into Azshara. Outside Orgrimmar, twin zeppelin towers provide transcontinental air travel directly to Tirisfal Glades and Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale.
