Wailing Caverns
The story
Tucked beneath the Lushwater Oasis in the arid Barrens lies the Wailing Caverns, a labyrinthine system of subterranean springs and fissures named for the eerie whistling of trapped steam. What began as a noble druidic effort to revitalize Kalimdor's sun-bleached savanna has devolved into a warped, poisonous underworld. The caverns now teem with twisted wildlife and fallen disciples corrupted by a deep, unnatural nightmare.
The night elf druid Naralex originally discovered this vast water system and devised an ambitious design: by opening a conduit straight into the Emerald Dream, he would siphon pure primal life essence through the subterranean springs, transforming the parched Barrens back into a thriving, verdant paradise. Deep in the Cavern of Mists, Naralex slipped into communion with the Dream, anchored by his loyal acolytes. Tragically, rather than tapping into pure vitality, the druid's sleeping mind touched the Emerald Nightmare. The festering corruption instantly seized him, transforming his well-intentioned conduit into a valve pouring venom and madness into the underground waterways.
