Stormwind City

The story

Stormwind City is the bustling capital of the Kingdom of Stormwind and the premier human bastion in the world following the fall of Lordaeron. Rebuilt from ashes by the Stonemasons Guild after its destruction in the First War, its magnificent white stone districts now house the heart of the Grand Alliance. Beneath its majestic canals and cathedrals, however, the city grapples with the sudden disappearance of King Varian Wrynn and brewing political intrigue.

Founded over a millennium ago by the descendants of the Arathi, Stormwind stood for generations as a flourishing, self-sufficient realm. That golden era ended when the Orcish Horde poured through the Dark Portal, laying waste to the southern continent and razing the capital to the ground in the First War. Survivors led by Sir Anduin Lothar fled north across the Great Sea to Lordaeron. Following the Horde's defeat in the Second War, King Terenas Menethil II and the Alliance funded a complete reconstruction. The Stonemasons Guild painstakingly rebuilt the capital into New Stormwind—a gleaming citadel of polished white stone and canal-laced boroughs.

Questions, answered

Who rules Stormwind right now?

Ten-year-old Prince Anduin Wrynn holds the crown, but actual governance is handled by Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, who acts as Regent of Stormwind and supreme commander of its military. Bolvar relies heavily on the counsel of royal advisor Lady Katrana Prestor while King Varian Wrynn remains missing.

What happened to King Varian Wrynn?

King Varian vanished under suspicious circumstances while traveling by ship to a diplomatic summit in Theramore. His disappearance was kept quiet to maintain stability, though rumors run rampant through the streets and countryside.

Why was the city rebuilt, and by whom?

The original city was burned to the ground by the Orcish Horde during the First War. After the Second War, the Stonemasons Guild, led by master craftsman Edwin VanCleef, painstakingly rebuilt the capital out of gleaming white stone with financial backing from the Alliance of Lordaeron.

Why did the stonemasons rebel against the crown?

The House of Nobles amassed heavy debts expanding Stormwind's military and refused to pay the Stonemasons Guild their promised wages. When Edwin VanCleef demanded restitution, the nobles disbanded the guild. The workers rioted, Queen Tiffin Wrynn was killed by a thrown rock, and the exiled stonemasons formed the Defias Brotherhood.

Who are the giant statues in the Valley of Heroes?

The statues honor the Sons of Lothar: General Turalyon, Ranger Captain Alleria Windrunner, Archmage Khadgar, Kurdran Wildhammer, and Danath Trollbane. They were raised to commemorate the heroes who ventured through the Dark Portal to draenor to seal the rift and protect Azeroth.

How does Stormwind connect to Ironforge?

Stormwind is connected to Ironforge by the Deeprun Tram, a subterranean railway built by High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque and commissioned by King Magni Bronzebeard to enable swift trade and rapid military reinforcement between both capitals.

Why isn't Stormwind sending troops to help Westfall and Redridge?

The royal court, heavily advised by Lady Katrana Prestor, insists the city cannot spare troops from its own walls and immediate borders. With the kingdom's finances stressed and political infighting paralyzing the House of Nobles, regional towns have been abandoned to rely on local militias.
