Elwynn Forest
The story
Elwynn Forest is the verdant heartland of the Kingdom of Stormwind, providing the capital with essential timber, gold, fish, and crops. Sheltered beneath stately hardwoods, it serves as the proving ground for new human recruits stepping forth from Northshire Abbey. Yet beneath its idyllic pastoral canopy, the woods are sorely beleaguered by encroaching vermin, displaced wildlife, and widespread brigandage.
Stretching south from the gates of Stormwind down to the Nazferiti River, Elwynn is a fertile region blessed with abundant rainfall and dense hardwood forests. Communities like Goldshire and the Eastvale Logging Camp provide crucial grain, livestock, lumber, and raw copper to sustain the grand capital. The region is also celebrated for breeding sturdy Evendale horses, favored by travelers and knights across the kingdom.
Questions, answered
Why is the Stormwind Guard barely policing the forest?
Stormwind's armed forces are severely overstretched. The kingdom expanded heavy military deployments southward into Stranglethorn Vale, running up deep debts and draining local manpower. As a result, outposts like Westbrook Garrison and Goldshire rely on small skeleton crews and volunteer recruits to fight off bandits, gnolls, and murlocs.
Why are there kobolds inside all the mines?
With guards in short supply, opportunistic kobolds swarmed into Fargodeep Mine, Jasperlode Mine, and Echo Ridge Mine in search of precious gold and minerals. They drove out the human prospectors and miners, aggressively defending their subterranean claims with candles, crude picks, and scavenged tools.
Who are the bandits wearing red masks?
They are members of the Defias Brotherhood, led by Edwin VanCleef. Many were originally artisans of the Stonemasons Guild who rebuilt Stormwind City after the First War. When the nobility refused to pay them their promised wages, riots broke out, leading to their banishment and descent into organized brigandage.
Where does the road south lead?
Crossing the bridge over the Nazferiti River takes you into Duskwood, historically known as Brightwood. That once-peaceful territory has fallen into unnatural darkness and is now infested with undead, monstrous spiders, and ravenous beasts.
What is the feud between the Maclures and Stonefields?
The Stonefields and the Maclures are neighboring farming families in southern Elwynn who have maintained a bitter, longstanding grudge against each other. Despite their endless bickering and accusations, two of their younger kin—Maybell Maclure and Tommy Joe Stonefield—have secretly fallen in love, complicating the rivalry even further.
What is the Tower of Azora?
The Tower of Azora is an arcane spire located along the road between Goldshire and the Eastvale Logging Camp. It houses secluded mages, including Theocritus, who observe the region's leylines and conduct magical research outside the direct oversight of Stormwind's Wizard's Sanctum.
