Capital
Undercity
The story
Deep beneath the shattered ruins of Lordaeron's Capital City lies the Undercity, the dark stronghold of the Forsaken. Originally carved out of ancient royal crypts and dungeons by the Scourge, it was seized by Lady Sylvanas Windrunner and remade into an impenetrable subterranean sanctuary. Today it serves as the seat of Forsaken power and the Horde's vital bastion in the northern Eastern Kingdoms.
Long before the plague swept Lordaeron, the catacombs, dungeons, and sewers beneath the palace were collectively known as the Undercity. It held the tombs of nobility, the kingdom's deepest prisons—where the former Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer was once held before his escape—and the poorest denizens of the realm. When Arthas Menethil murdered King Terenas and laid waste to the capital in 20 ADP, the prince ordered his undead servants to excavate and expand the subterranean passages into a fortified seat of Scourge rule.
Questions, answered
What was the Undercity before the undead took it over?
Beneath the palace of Lordaeron lay the ancient crypts of human royalty, along with the city's dungeon complex and vast sewer network. It housed prisoners of war, including Orgrim Doomhammer, as well as destitute citizens living in the subterranean shadows. After sacking the capital, Prince Arthas began turning these catacombs into a Scourge fortress before Sylvanas captured them.
Why is the city built underground instead of on the surface?
The surface city of Lordaeron was utterly ruined during the Third War, making it difficult to defend against the Scarlet Crusade, Scourge forces, and Alliance survivors. The subterranean tunnels offered natural fortification, choke points, and secrecy, allowing the Forsaken to complete the Scourge's initial construction and thrive unseen.
Who rules the Undercity?
The city is ruled by Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, the Banshee Queen and Queen of the Forsaken. She governs from the Royal Quarter, guarded by Forsaken royal sentries and her subjugated dreadlord lieutenant, Varimathras.
What is King Terenas's memorial in the ruins above?
Above the city's main lifts sits a stone memorial for the slain King Terenas Menethil II. It does not contain his body, as his corpse was cremated and his ashes discarded during Kel'Thuzad's resurrection. Surviving Alliance humans bravely carved the monument amidst the ruins so the memory of Lordaeron's last true king would endure.
What are the strange noises in the Lordaeron throne room?
In the ruined throne room above the Undercity lifts, spectral echoes of the past still linger. Visitors standing in the center can hear faint phantom sounds: the celebratory bells and rose petals of Arthas's return, the warning words of the prophet Medivh, and the final conversation between King Terenas and his patricidal son.
Why do the Forsaken allow other Horde members here?
The Forsaken formed an alliance of convenience with Warchief Thrall's Horde for survival, surrounded as they are by hostile Scarlet zealots and Scourge legions. While living Horde races find the toxic fumes and alchemical rivers stifling, emissaries and travelers are allowed access to foster diplomatic and military ties.
