Forsaken

The Forsaken are a free-willed faction of intelligent undead who broke away from the Scourge following the Third War. Led by the Banshee Queen Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, they dwell within the subterranean Undercity carved beneath the ruins of Lordaeron's capital. Though deeply distrusted across Azeroth, they maintain a tenuous alliance of convenience with the Horde.

Broken Shackles

When the Lich King's grip over his northern armies slipped after the Third War, thousands of undead in the blighted ruins of Lordaeron suddenly regained their sapience and memories. Horrified by the butchery they had been forced to carry out while enslaved to his will, these former citizens found themselves reviled and hunted by the living. Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, the fallen ranger-general of Quel'Thalas who had been transformed into an unholy banshee, rallied these adrift spirits, claimed the catacombs beneath Capital City, and dubbed her new nation the Forsaken.

An Alliance of Convenience

Hemmed in by relentless enemies—chief among them the fanatic Scarlet Crusade and the Scourge—Sylvanas dispatched emissaries seeking allies. Across the Great Sea in Kalimdor, tauren elders counseled compassion, believing the cursed people might yet find redemption or a cure through the earth. Despite Warchief Thrall's misgivings, the Horde admitted the Forsaken, gaining a vital northern foothold in the Eastern Kingdoms.
