Lordaeron

Lordaeron is the great northern subcontinent of the Eastern Kingdoms, once the glorious heart of human civilization and the Alliance. Following the devastation of the Third War, its former kingdoms lie in ruins, contested by the undead Scourge, Sylvanas Windrunner's Forsaken, and desperate remnants of the living.

Cradle of Northern Humanity

Lordaeron shares its name with the human city-state of Lordaeron, which rose in the north after the ancient Empire of Arathor and grew into the most powerful of the human kingdoms. Stretching from the rugged Arathi Highlands in the south across scenic forests and waterways up toward Quel'Thalas, the region nurtured thriving kingdoms like Lordaeron, Dalaran, Gilneas, and Alterac. It was historically celebrated for fertile farmlands in Tirisfal and Hillsbrad, mountain strongholds, and the sacred cradle of the Holy Light.

The Scourge and the Fall

During the Third War, Lordaeron became ground zero for the Lich King's invasion. Through tainted grain, the Cult of the Damned transformed countless northern citizens into mindless undead monstrosities. Prince Arthas Menethil fell to darkness, returning from Northrend to slay his father, King Terenas Menethil II, and orchestrate the total slaughter of the Capital City. The thriving heartland quickly rotted into the blighted nightmare known as the Plaguelands.

A Contested Wasteland

Today, Lordaeron is a brutal battleground defined by fractured loyalties. Beneath the ruins of the Capital City, Lady Sylvanas Windrunner and the Forsaken have carved out the Undercity, establishing a sovereign realm of free-willed undead aligned with the Horde. To the east, the Lich King's mindless Scourge clings to corrupted keeps and strongholds. Meanwhile, human zealots of the Scarlet Crusade, surviving Alliance settlements in Hillsbrad, and wild forest trolls clash relentlessly over what remains.
