Ironforge

The story

Carved into the heart of Ironforge Mountain in snowy Dun Morogh, Ironforge is the ancestral capital of the Bronzebeard dwarves and an unassailable bastion of the Alliance. Centered on the molten heat of the Great Forge, this sprawling underground city serves as a bustling hub of commerce, industry, and ancient dwarven lore. Under the steadfast rule of King Magni Bronzebeard, it now also shelters the displaced gnomes of nearby Gnomeregan.

Ironforge was founded twenty-five hundred years ago when the first generation of dwarves awakened in Uldaman and journeyed west into Dun Morogh's jagged peaks. Delving into the tallest mountain, they built a massive shrine to their titan progenitor Khaz'goroth alongside the colossal Great Forge. Ever since, the city has expanded in concentric rings around that fiery hearth. Unlike surface capitals, Ironforge is entirely enclosed beneath stone ceilings, warmed by roaring hearths and subterranean rivers of molten magma. Its fortified gates and cavernous depths have proven near-impregnable throughout centuries of war.

Questions, answered

Who rules Ironforge?

King Magni Bronzebeard rules Ironforge and the kingdom of Khaz Modan from the High Seat. A skilled warrior and master blacksmith, he has governed his people through the Second and Third Wars and remains a deeply loyal pillar of the Alliance.

Why are there so many gnomes in Ironforge?

When the nearby gnomish capital of Gnomeregan fell to a sudden trogg invasion and a disastrous radiation accident, the surviving gnomes fled into Dun Morogh. King Magni welcomed them into Ironforge, granting them an entire quarter of the city now known as Tinker Town.

What is the Great Forge?

The Great Forge is the fiery industrial heart of the city, fed by underground waterfalls of molten magma. It surrounds the Great Anvil, where dwarven weaponsmiths craft legendary arms and armor. King Magni himself forged the famed holy blade Ashbringer upon this anvil.

How do you travel between Ironforge and Stormwind?

Ironforge is connected directly to Stormwind City by the Deeprun Tram, an extraordinary subterranean railway built by gnomish engineering that cuts straight through the mountain bedrock of the Eastern Kingdoms.

Has Ironforge ever fallen to an enemy army?

Ironforge has never fallen to an outside invader. Kilrogg Deadeye's Bleeding Hollow clan laid siege to it for months during the Second War, and the Dark Irons fought into the city during the War of the Three Hammers, but the gates and defenders held.

Where did the other dwarf clans go?

After the War of the Three Hammers, the defeated Wildhammer clan relocated north into the Wetlands and the Hinterlands, while the hostile Dark Iron clan settled within the Redridge and Blackrock regions under the thrall of the Firelord.
