Stonetalon Mountains

The Stonetalon Mountains are a rugged, wind-carved chain of craggy peaks bordering Ashenvale, the Barrens, and Desolace. Revered by both the night elves and the tauren as a sacred sanctuary, the region's sacred heights stand in sharp contrast to the smoke and machinery choking its lower canyons. Today, the mountains are torn by deforestation, volatile elemental devastation, and simmering border hostilities.

Rising sharply out of central Kalimdor, the Stonetalon range catches the moisture drifting from the western seas, giving birth to sudden downpours and treacherous, rain-slick sandstone trails. The dominant feature of the lower valleys is the incessant scouring gale known as the Ill Winds, capable of blinding travelers with grit or throwing the careless straight off sheer cliffsides. Higher up, evergreen forests mantle the ridges surrounding Stonetalon Peak, where the night elves tend ancestral barrows and glades, watching over the sacred roosts of wyverns and hippogryphs that nest along Mirkfallon Lake.
