Swamp of Sorrows
The story
The Swamp of Sorrows is a murky, brackish wetland tucked between Deadwind Pass and the arid Blasted Lands. Once the northern expanse of the ancient Black Morass, its salt-crusted bogs are home to dangerous wildlife, green dragonspawn, and the ruined Temple of Atal'Hakkar sunken beneath the Pool of Tears. While the Horde maintains the fortified garrison of Stonard, the Alliance has no safe haven within the mire, leaving the wilderness largely untamed.
Long before the coming of the Orcish Horde, these marshes formed the northern half of an enormous wetlands known as the Black Morass. Following the shattering of the Gurubashi Empire, the fanatical Atal'ai trolls fled into the mire to erect the Temple of Atal'Hakkar, intending to summon their bloodthirsty loa, Hakkar the Soulflayer. Sensing the catastrophe, the Aspect Ysera unleashed her powers, drowning the cursed pyramid beneath the waters of the Pool of Tears. Green dragonflight guardians led by Eranikus were stationed to vigilantly watch over the drowned structure. When the Dark Portal's cataclysm later scorched the southern morass into the Blasted Lands, this northern fen earned its current sorrowful name.
