Zul'Gurub
Zul'Gurub is an ancient temple city nestled deep in the jungles of northeastern Stranglethorn Vale. Once the glorious heart of the sprawling Gurubashi Empire, it now stands as a perilous stronghold where jungle trolls scheme to summon an ancient, terrible entity into the world.
Heart of the Fallen Empire
Thousands of years ago, Zul'Gurub reigned supreme as the vibrant capital of the entire Gurubashi Empire, uniting the jungle troll tribes under its grand stone ziggurats. That golden age shattered roughly fifteen hundred years before the opening of the Dark Portal when a vicious civil war tore the empire apart. A radical sect of priests, the Atal'ai, sought to summon Hakkar the Soulflayer—a bloodthirsty ancient god—to seize absolute power. Though loyalist tribes banded together to defeat and banish the Atal'ai northward into the Swamp of Sorrows, the devastation broke the empire's spine, leaving Zul'Gurub a violent shadow of its former grandeur.
