Temple of Atal'Hakkar

The Temple of Atal'Hakkar, widely known as the Sunken Temple, is a submerged fortress built by exiled troll priests dedicated to the blood god Hakkar. Sunk beneath the marshes by the green dragonflight centuries ago, its drowned halls remain a staging ground for forbidden rituals and dark corruption.

Wrath of the Green Flight

Over a millennium ago, a catastrophic civil war shattered the Gurubashi Empire when the Atal'ai priesthood attempted to summon Hakkar the Soulflayer. Exiled to the north, the surviving zealots raised a massive stone temple in the Swamp of Sorrows to finish their dark work. Learning of their scheme, the Dragon Aspect Ysera smashed the ziggurat deep into the mire, inundating its chambers beneath the Pool of Tears. Green dragon wardens were left behind to guard the drowned ruins and ensure Hakkar's return was thwarted forever.

A Slumber Turned Nightmare

Instead of burying the cult, the temple's submersion provided the Atal'ai isolation to continue their grisly sacrifices unhindered. Over the centuries, corruption began to rot the guardians from within; the dragon sentinels succumb to madness while the Atal'ai, guided by Jammal'an the Prophet, prepare the way for Hakkar's avatar. Now, both the Horde and Alliance keep an anxious eye on the submerged ziggurat as shadowy rumors slip out from the swamp's depths.
