Alterac Mountains

The story

The Alterac Mountains are a cold, ruined highland in central Lordaeron, once home to the treacherous human kingdom of Alterac and the scholarly magocracy of Dalaran. Today, the snow-dusted crags are overrun by the Crushridge ogres, the aristocratic bandits of the Syndicate, and remnant arcane forces. Neither the Alliance nor the Horde holds a secure hub here, leaving travelers to operate out of the nearby foothills while contesting the hidden valley nearby.

During the Second War, Alterac was one of the Seven Kingdoms of humanity, but King Aiden Perenolde betrayed the Alliance of Lordaeron to side with the Old Horde, hoping to preserve his realm. His treachery was discovered and stamped out, fracturing the nation into disputed borderlands. Following the kingdom's dissolution and the horrors of the Third War, Alterac's grand stone capital was reduced to rubble. Today, the Ruins of Alterac are occupied by the brutal Crushridge ogres, led by Mug'thol, while the surviving human nobility organized into the Syndicate, a vicious criminal syndicate fighting to reclaim their lost estates by force.
