Main Characters in WoW Forever Lore: 16 Names to Know

The main characters to know in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) are the leaders of the original game's first year, Thrall, Sylvanas Windrunner, Jaina Proudmoore and Tyrande Whisperwind, the missing king Varian Wrynn, and eleven more figures whose names fill the map. The game is set in the first year of World of Warcraft, which Warcraft Wiki puts at 25 years after the Dark Portal.

Quick answer: In the original game's first year, Thrall rules Orgrimmar, Sylvanas the Undercity beneath Lordaeron, Jaina Theramore and Tyrande Darnassus. Varian is missing, and Lothar, Llane, Orgrim, Grom, Terenas, Uther and Cenarius are dead. Khadgar, Medivh and Illidan are away from the Azeroth you walk. Elune is the goddess.

Sixteen WoW Forever characters sorted by status in year 25: Thrall, Sylvanas, Jaina, Tyrande and the missing Varian lead; Lothar, Llane, Orgrim, Grom, Terenas, Uther and Cenarius are dead; Khadgar, Medivh and Illidan are elsewhere; Elune is a goddess.

Who leads the Alliance and Horde in WoW Forever?

Five names carry the factions. These are the original-game statuses; Blizzard has not published a Forever cast list that I opened.

  • Thrall is Warchief of the Horde, ruling from the Valley of Wisdom in Orgrimmar, per Warcraft Wiki. See Thrall.
  • Sylvanas Windrunner rules the Forsaken from the Undercity; Warcraft Wiki records her sending adventurers out in Year 25 and her Forsaken allied with the Horde. Blizzard's Forsaken Kingdom recap covers her rise. See Sylvanas.
  • Jaina Proudmoore rules Theramore, and Warcraft Wiki says she pressed for a summit between Thrall and Varian. See Jaina.
  • Tyrande Whisperwind leads the night elves as High Priestess of Elune from Darnassus; Malfurion is lost in the Emerald Dream, per Warcraft Wiki. See Tyrande.
  • Varian Wrynn is the missing king of Stormwind. Warcraft Wiki says the Defias Brotherhood abducted him on a diplomatic mission to Theramore and that his son Anduin took the throne under the regency of Bolvar Fordragon. See Varian.

Which famous names are history in WoW Forever?

These figures died before the game begins, yet their names are on the map.

  • Anduin Lothar was killed by Orgrim Doomhammer at the foot of Blackrock Spire, says Warcraft Wiki. See Lothar.
  • Llane Wrynn, Stormwind's king, was assassinated by Garona during the First War. See Llane.
  • Orgrim Doomhammer was the Old Horde's Warchief, and Thrall named Orgrimmar for him, per Warcraft Wiki. See Orgrim.
  • Grom Hellscream is buried in Demon Fall Canyon in Ashenvale, per Warcraft Wiki. See Grom.
  • Terenas Menethil II, Lordaeron's king, was killed by Arthas with Frostmourne. See Terenas.
  • Uther the Lightbringer has a tomb in the Western Plaguelands, east of Chillwind Camp, says Warcraft Wiki. See Uther.
  • Cenarius, the demigod teacher of the druids, was killed by Grom's corrupted orcs; Warcraft Wiki places his return in later events. See Cenarius.

Who is away from Azeroth in WoW Forever?

Some of the best-known names are elsewhere. No source I opened places them in Forever.

  • Khadgar built Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands; Warcraft Wiki places him in Shattrath, in Outland, during The Burning Crusade, after Forever. See Khadgar.
  • Medivh returned as the Prophet and, per Warcraft Wiki, vanished to places unknown after the Battle of Mount Hyjal. See Medivh.
  • Illidan Stormrage first appears in the game in The Burning Crusade, says Warcraft Wiki. See Illidan.
  • Elune is the night elves' moon goddess, with her Temple of the Moon in Darnassus per Warcraft Wiki. See Elune.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever adds quests and the Skyborne, so more characters will matter than these 16; no complete cast list is published in sources I opened.
  • The statuses above come from Warcraft Wiki's record of the original game, not from Forever's launch build; Blizzard says the game occupies its own "time bubble" (September 13, 2026), so Forever may differ.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on puts a one-line story on NPC tooltips, opens an NPC's full entry when you hover and press its key, and keeps Lore buttons on quests; dungeon primers hide their final-fight explanation behind a spoiler tag. The included male narrator and the optional female narrator are generated voices, not voice actors. Willo, a companion app free to start with 50 answers a day, lets you target an NPC and talk to them when Live game info is on, with characters answering in their own voices from the Champion plan up (Plans page, November 2). Both are fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard, and Willo can be wrong.
