Who Is Varian Wrynn? The Missing King of Stormwind Explained
Varian Wrynn is the missing king of Stormwind: the son of King Llane Wrynn, raised in exile in Lordaeron, crowned after the Second War and then abducted while traveling to Theramore to meet Jaina Proudmoore. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), his young son Anduin sits on the throne under Regent-Lord Bolvar Fordragon.
Quick answer: Varian watched his father die and Stormwind burn, grew up in Lordaeron beside Arthas, and was crowned at eighteen. The Defias Brotherhood, born of an unpaid stonemason's debt, kidnapped him on the road to Theramore. Stormwind has been ruled by a child and a regent ever since.

A throne can stand empty and still cast a shadow over a whole city. Walk Stormwind's canals in the first year of WoW and you walk beneath a king who is not there.

Why was Varian raised in Lordaeron?
Warcraft Wiki, Engadget and Giant Bomb agree that Varian's father Llane was killed by Garona during the Horde's invasion, and that Anduin Lothar led the survivors of Stormwind to Lordaeron. There King Terenas Menethil treated the young prince as an equal, and Giant Bomb and Engadget say Varian became friends with Arthas. Read Who Is Anduin Lothar? and Arthas Menethil's story.
How did Varian become king, and where did the Defias come from?
A rebuilt city needs builders, and builders need to be paid. Giant Bomb says Varian was crowned at eighteen, and Warcraft Wiki says Terenas supported his crown. Engadget says he hired stonemasons to rebuild Stormwind and did not pay them, and that the stonemasons became the Defias Brotherhood. Warcraft Wiki traces the same unrest to a dispute between the stonemasons and the House of Nobles over unpaid debts. Warcraft Wiki says his wife Tiffin died in that riot. The full tale is in the Defias Brotherhood explained.
What happened to Varian Wrynn?
Warcraft Wiki, Engadget and Giant Bomb all say Varian was kidnapped by the Defias while traveling to Theramore to meet Jaina Proudmoore. Warcraft Wiki says rumors placed him on Alcaz Island. Anduin was given the crown, and Highlord Bolvar Fordragon acted as Regent-Lord, with Lady Katrana Prestor advising, per Warcraft Wiki and Engadget. Giant Bomb confirms the child king and the regent. See Stormwind's history and Jaina Proudmoore's story.
Who is Lady Katrana Prestor?
The kindest voice at court is not always the kindest heart. Warcraft Wiki says that in the original game Lady Prestor is Onyxia in disguise, a royal councilor whose advice shaped Bolvar's choices, and Engadget's Know Your Lore also names her as Onyxia. Warcraft Tavern says Onyxia's Lair, the 40-player raid in Dustwallow Marsh, unlocks on December 9 and requires the Drakefire Amulet, earned through faction questlines. See the WoW Forever raids guide.
Where does WoW Forever touch Varian's story?
Blizzard's announcement of the nine launch dungeons names Alcaz Prison as a level 48 to 53 dungeon on Alcaz Island, in Dustwallow Marsh. Blizzard says the island has long carried rumors of prisoners "including King Varian Wrynn," that the doors are now open, and that the Defias Brotherhood and naga are fighting inside. Warcraft Tavern repeats the same description. See the new dungeons guide. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and shows readable quest background as you play.
What about Lo'Gosh?
Engadget and Warcraft Wiki connect Varian to a later comic in which he loses his memory, is enslaved and becomes the gladiator Lo'Gosh. Engadget names the druid Hamuul Runetotem as the one who gave the name; Giant Bomb says orcs gave it, meaning "Spirit Wolf." Both Warcraft Wiki and Engadget treat this as comic material, not as the original game's story.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard has not said who rules Stormwind in Forever; the child king and regent come from the original game's era.
- The sources read do not say whether Alcaz Prison reveals Varian's fate, only that rumors surround it.
- Sources disagree on who named Lo'Gosh.
- Later events, including Varian's return, are outside WoW Forever.
