The History of Stormwind: Wars, Rebuilding and Secrets

Stormwind is the capital of the human Kingdom of Stormwind: the Horde razed it in the First War, the Stonemasons Guild rebuilt it after the Second War, and in the first year of World of Warcraft it is ruled by the child king Anduin Wrynn under Regent Bolvar Fordragon. World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is set in that first year, so this is the Stormwind that Alliance players meet.

Quick answer: The Horde destroyed Stormwind in the First War and the survivors fled to Lordaeron. After the Second War the nobles hired stonemasons to rebuild it, then refused to pay them, which led to the Defias Brotherhood. King Varian Wrynn is missing, so a child king and a regent rule.

Timeline of Stormwind: razed in the First War, survivors flee to Lordaeron, Alliance wins the Second War, stonemasons rebuild the city, nobles refuse payment, Varian goes missing, Anduin is crowned with Bolvar as regent

What is Stormwind?

Warcraft Wiki calls Stormwind City the capital of the Kingdom of Stormwind and the largest human city on Azeroth, in northwestern Elwynn Forest. After the Third War it became one of the last great human cities. The zone around it is covered in the Elwynn Forest guide.

How was Stormwind destroyed in the First War?

The Horde destroyed Stormwind in the First War. Warcraft Wiki says the Horde conquered nearly all of the kingdom and, after a failed first siege, Orgrim Doomhammer led a second siege of Stormwind City, which razed it to the ground. The Vanilla WoW fan wiki says the Horde destroyed the Kingdom of Azeroth, including its capital, Stormwind Keep, and survivors fled to Lordaeron. Warcraft Wiki says Anduin Lothar judged the war lost and led the remnants of the army and civilians across the Great Sea to ask King Terenas Menethil II for help.

How was Stormwind rebuilt after the Second War?

The Alliance of Lordaeron, formed after Lothar's appeal, won the Second War, and Warcraft Wiki says Stormwind was reclaimed afterward. The Vanilla WoW fan wiki says that after the orcs were defeated at the Dark Portal, the nobles decided to rebuild the city to surpass its former splendor, gathered skilled stonemasons and architects, and finished it in a remarkably short time. Warcraft Wiki credits the Stonemasons Guild with the rebuilding. The Alliance's own origins are in Alliance vs Horde Lore.

Why did the stonemasons turn against Stormwind?

The House of Nobles did not pay the Stonemasons Guild for the rebuilding. Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia both say the nobles pointed to debts from military expansion, the guild's leader Edwin VanCleef demanded payment, and the House ordered the guild disbanded. Riots followed, and Queen Tiffin Wrynn died. The exiled masons formed the Defias Brotherhood in Westfall. The full story is in The Defias Brotherhood Explained.

Who rules Stormwind in the first year of World of Warcraft?

A child king and a regent rule Stormwind. Warcraft Wiki says King Varian Wrynn was abducted shortly after the Third War on his way to Theramore to meet Jaina Proudmoore, that young Anduin Wrynn was crowned to keep order at the urging of Lady Katrana Prestor, and that Highlord Bolvar Fordragon acted as regent and Supreme Commander. The Vanilla WoW fan wiki gives the same arrangement: child king Anduin, Bolvar as regent and Lady Prestor supporting the throne. Warcraft Wiki's page on Varian says Prestor is the black dragon Onyxia in disguise; that is a quest-line reveal, so treat it as a spoiler.

What is Stormwind's place in the Alliance?

Stormwind is the Alliance's main base. Warcraft Wiki says that after the Third War Stormwind became the center of the Alliance's leadership and military power, and that the Ironforge dwarves are the Alliance's closest geographical partners. The Alliance of Lordaeron itself was ravaged by the Scourge in the Third War, according to the same wiki. For which zones lead to the city, see Alliance leveling zones. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background about places as you stand in them, and the optional Willo Windows companion lets you ask lore questions by voice. Both are fan-made.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever's rulers: the sources reviewed do not name Forever's leaders. This guide describes the original game's era, which Forever builds on. Blizzard Watch reports that Forever deliberately diverges from original lore in a few places, so in-game text decides.
  • Modern rulers: Warcraft Wiki's Stormwind page lists later rulers in its infobox. Those belong to a later period and are not part of Forever.
  • Dates: this guide gives no years for the First War events. Warcraft Wiki's First War page dates the war to years 0 to 5 after the Dark Portal.
  • Later events: the Cataclysm, which razed parts of the city again, is outside Forever's setting.
  • Beta limits: the Forever beta was capped at level 30, according to kami-labs.
