The Dragonmaw Clan Explained: Grim Batol, the Demon Soul and the Wetlands
The Dragonmaw are the orc clan that took the Dragon Soul from the red dragon Orastrasz, used it as the Demon Soul to enslave the dragon queen Alexstrasza at Grim Batol, and lost their fortress when she tore it down; the survivors went to ground in the Wetlands. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Method's beta guide lists the Dragonmaw Orc Clan among the groups that have overtaken the Wetlands site of the Excavation Site: Wetlands dungeon.
Quick answer: Under their shaman Zuluhed, and nudged by the black dragon Deathwing, the Dragonmaw seized an artifact that could bind dragons. Nekros Skullcrusher used it to hold Alexstrasza captive. The human mage Rhonin destroyed it, the red dragons burned Grim Batol, and the survivors were interned or hid in the Wetlands.

A dragon in chains is a story that cannot end quietly. The orcs who bound the Dragonqueen thought they had taken a mountain and a sky with it; the mountain, in the end, fell on them.

Who are the Dragonmaw?
The Dragonmaw came to Azeroth with the Old Horde. Engadget's Know Your Lore column says they were loyal to Blackhand, followed Orgrim Doomhammer north after Blackhand fell, and rose from a minor clan to a powerful force. Their chief, Zuluhed the Whacked, was a shaman. For the wider story of the orcs, read The Orcs of Azeroth.
How did the Dragonmaw enslave Alexstrasza?
Warcraft Wiki says Deathwing sent Zuluhed visions of taming winged creatures. Engadget agrees that Deathwing manipulated the chieftain into recovering the artifact. Warcraft Wiki says the clan killed Orastrasz in the Redridge Mountains to take the Dragon Soul, and WoWWiki says the same. Zuluhed's second-in-command, Nekros Skullcrusher, renamed it the Demon Soul and, with it, held Alexstrasza captive inside Grim Batol. Read Deathwing Explained for the black dragon.
The Dragonmaw used the red dragons as mounts. Warcraft Wiki and WoWWiki both say dragon riders took part in the Second War, including the attack on Quel'Thalas.
What happened at Grim Batol?
Warcraft Wiki's page on the Battle of Grim Batol says the human mage Rhonin led a group that destroyed the Demon Soul and freed Alexstrasza, and her dragons then tore Grim Batol apart and burned most of the clan. Alliance troops captured the survivors and sent them to internment camps. WoWWiki repeats the internment, and adds that some survivors fled to the Wetlands. Warcraft Wiki's clan page dates the battle to year 10 after the Dark Portal.
Where do you meet the Dragonmaw in the Wetlands?
Survivors who escaped went to the hills of the Wetlands. WoWWiki places them at the Angerfang Encampment, east of Whelgar's Excavation Site, and Warcraft Wiki calls it the largest Dragonmaw orc camp in the region. In the original game, both wikis say the chieftain there was Nek'rosh Skullcrusher, Nekros's son, who vowed revenge on the dragons. Warcraft Wiki adds that he built catapults to besiege Menethil Harbor and that Alliance adventurers sent by Captain Stoutfist killed him. WoWWiki adds that his head was brought to Stoutfist.
WoW Forever's Excavation Site: Wetlands dungeon has its entrance near Dun Algaz. Method's beta guide lists the Dragonmaw Orc Clan among the groups overtaking the site and names Dragonmaw Saboteurs, Warders and Thaumaturgists among the dungeon's important trash. Our Excavation Site: Wetlands guide has the boss route, and the Alliance leveling zones guide places the Wetlands in a typical level 20 to 30 route. The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable quest background as you play, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Both are fan-made.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard has not published Forever's Wetlands quests, so this article uses the original game's story.
- Warcraft Wiki says the Nek'rosh content was removed from the live game in patch 4.0.3a but is present in Classic, and that clan leadership fell to Gorfax Angerfang around the Cataclysm, which is later than WoW Forever; its Nek'rosh page names Overlord Mor'ghor as his successor. Which leader, if any, Forever uses is not confirmed.
- The year of the Battle of Grim Batol comes from Warcraft Wiki's clan page alone; its page on the battle gives no year.
- The Dragonmaw's later history, including their fate after the Cataclysm, is later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever.
