Ashenvale Explained: The Night Elf Forest, Mystral Lake and the War for the Trees
Ashenvale is the ancestral forest of the night elves in south-western northern Kalimdor, a contested zone where the Alliance holds Astranaar, the Horde holds Splintertree Post, and Mystral Lake and the entrance to Blackfathom Deeps lie within its trees. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Games.gg lists Ashenvale at levels 19 to 32 for both factions, while Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia list the original zone at levels 7 to 30.
Quick answer: Ashenvale sits south of Darkshore and Felwood and north of the Stonetalon Mountains. The Alliance quests from Astranaar and Maestra's Post, the Horde from Splintertree Post and Zoram'gar Outpost, and both fight satyrs, furbolgs and corrupted water elementals around Mystral Lake.

Ashenvale is the kind of forest that remembers who cut it. The night elves call it their ancestral homeland, and every stump is an argument still unfinished.

What is Ashenvale?
Ashenvale is the night elves' ancestral homeland, according to both Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia. It is a wilderness of ancient trees, hills and lakes, and both wikis mark it as a contested zone. For the night elves' wider story, read Night Elf History.
What happened in Ashenvale in the Third War?
The Third War came to Ashenvale as logging. Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia say goblins under Neeloc Greedyfingers began deforesting the area, and Wowpedia says furbolgs stopped much of the damage. The orcs of Grommash Hellscream joined the logging, and both wikis say Cenarius, the forest's guardian, was killed by Grommash, who had been manipulated by the Burning Legion. Read The Orcs of Azeroth for what drove them, and Elune Explained for the goddess whose children walk these woods.
Who holds Ashenvale now?
Both sides hold part of it. Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia name Astranaar as the Alliance's main settlement, with Maestra's Post and Forest Song, and Splintertree Post as the Horde's main base, with Zoram'gar Outpost, Silverwind Refuge and the Warsong Lumber Camp. Wowpedia says the Warsong camps harvested the forest for lumber, and that Silverwind Refuge was captured and deforested.
What is Mystral Lake?
Mystral Lake is the largest lake in Ashenvale. Warcraft Wiki and the Classic WoW Wiki place it in south-central Ashenvale, just south of Silverwind Refuge, and both say its water elementals are a significant threat to lower-level players. Games.gg's Forever guide calls them Befouled Water Elementals, killed here for the quest Stonetalon Standstill. Warcraft Wiki alone says a Forsaken mage named Sarilus Foulborne corrupted them, and that the corruption outlasted his death.
Which creatures live in Ashenvale?
- Furbolgs: Thistlefur Hold and Thistlefur Village, with a Foulweald camp in the same forest, per Wowpedia and Games.gg. Read Furbolgs of Azeroth.
- Satyrs: the elven ruins at Xavian, Night Run and Satyrnaar, per Wowpedia and Warcraft Wiki.
- Naga: along the Zoram Strand, per Warcraft Wiki, near the entrance to the sunken temple of Blackfathom Deeps. See the Blackfathom Deeps guide.
Where do you quest in Ashenvale in WoW Forever?
Games.gg's Forever guide names the hubs. Alliance players take the Astranaar flight path, where Raene Wolfrunner runs the Raene's Cleansing chain, then work from Maestra's Post, where the Tower of Althalaxx chain runs through Delgren the Purifier. Horde players use Splintertree Post for the Ashenvale Hunt, and Zoram'gar Outpost for the Earthen Ring's Je'neu. Games.gg says the eastern half should wait until level 27 or higher, and that Forever has no level scaling and no flying mounts. Games.gg also says the quest data comes from Classic. The Alliance leveling zones guide and Horde leveling zones guide show where Ashenvale fits in a full route.
The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you walk the forest, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Both are fan-made.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard has not published a final Ashenvale level range. Games.gg's 19 to 32 is a community guide, and both wikis list the original zone at 7 to 30.
- Mor'shan Rampart is listed under Alliance settlements in Warcraft Wiki's infobox, although that page's text describes Horde forces there, and Wowpedia lists it under Horde, so its faction is unclear.
- Only Warcraft Wiki names Sarilus Foulborne as the source of Mystral Lake's corruption.
- Later wars over Ashenvale, recorded on Warcraft Wiki, are later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever.
