WoW Forever Blackfathom Deeps Guide: Entrance, Bosses and Story

Blackfathom Deeps is a sunken night elf temple on the Ashenvale coast, a mostly linear dungeon of naga, murlocs and hydras that ends with the hydra Aku'mai. Warcraft Tavern says it is unchanged from its Classic version apart from some loot updates, so it is a returning dungeon rather than one of the nine new ones. The sources disagree on its level range, so treat that as provisional.

Quick answer: The entrance is in the north-west corner of Ashenvale at the Zoram Strand, about 14.5, 14.6. Swim through a pool, then pass a winding cave of elite naga. Bosses: Ghamoo-Ra, Lady Sarevess, Gelihast, Old Serra'kis, Twilight Lord Kelris and Aku'mai.

Blizzard has not said which dungeons are open on launch day. For the full picture, see the new dungeons overview.

How to get there

The entrance sits inside sunken night elf ruins. Warcraft Tavern gives the spot as about 14.5, 14.6 at the Zoram Strand. You swim through a pool and then follow a narrow, winding cave filled with elite naga before the dungeon opens up into large and small caverns.

Alliance: Method says to travel to Auberdine in Darkshore and head south. It adds that Forever adds a Stormwind Harbor port with a boat to Auberdine.

Horde: Use the Zoram Strand flight path. Method recommends having the Crossroads flight path by this level and taking the Zoram Strand one before you go in.

The bosses in order

This follows Method's order. Warcraft Tavern's guide lists the same names with slightly different placement.

  1. Ghamoo-Ra: a giant turtle with heavy armor and one ability, Trample, an area attack. Physical damage is reduced, casters are not, so Sunder Armor and Faerie Fire help physical damage dealers. Keep the group topped off and move away after each Trample.
  2. Lady Sarevess: comes with two naga adds. Kill or crowd control the adds first. Her Forked Lightning hits everyone in front of her, so the tank should face her away from the group. She also casts Frost Nova and slows a random target.
  3. Gelihast: an optional murloc boss. Clear his murlocs in packs of one or two, then pull him. His one ability is Net, a 10-second immobilize. Warcraft Tavern says clicking the stone behind him gives the Blessing of Blackfathom, but does not describe what it does.
  4. Old Serra'kis: hidden in the water. He has no real abilities, but the fight is a breath challenge. Warcraft Tavern says he heals himself periodically, so manage air for everyone.
  5. Twilight Lord Kelris: guards the way to Aku'mai. Clear the adds first and use the wall near the entrance for line of sight on casters. His Mind Blast hits the tank and Sleep hits a random player, including the healer. Warcraft Tavern says neither can be interrupted.
  6. Aku'mai: the hydra and final boss. Poison Cloud deals heavy Nature damage to everyone, so move out of it, and Frenzied Rage gives him 75% more attack speed. Save stuns and defensive cooldowns for that window.

Aku'mai's hidden chamber

Warcraft Tavern treats Aku'mai as the final room. Method describes a secret chamber past Kelris's quarters where you click four braziers, one at a time, to summon mobs before the fight:

  • Bottom right: Aku'mai Servants
  • Bottom left: Aku'mai Snapjaws
  • Top right: Murkshallow Softshells
  • Top left: Barbed Crustaceans

Method says Poison Cloud pulses every five seconds for 45 seconds. That is the one place the two guides give different pictures of the fight, so expect to adjust on your first run.

Trash worth knowing

Method names the trash as naga, beasts and Twilight's Hammer cultists:

  • Murkshallow Snapclaw and Blackfathom Myrmidon: heavy hits that disarm the tank.
  • Blackfathom Sea Witch: Frost Nova to immobilize you.
  • Fallenroot Shadowstalker: stealthed until it attacks, and puts Curse of Weakness on the tank.
  • Fallenroot Hellcaller: Mana Burn. Interrupt or stun it.
  • Twilight Shadowmage: a priority target that can mind control a player. Pull it with line of sight.
  • Twilight Acolyte: heals itself and others. Interrupt its casts.

Quests

Warcraft Tavern lists five quests per faction plus class quests. Method gives levels and locations that differ in places, so check your quest log.

Alliance: In Search of Thaelrid (Dawnwatcher Shaedlass, Darnassus), Twilight Falls (Argent Guard Manados, Darnassus), Knowledge in the Deeps (Gerrig Bonegrip, Ironforge), Researching the Corruption (Gershala Nightwhisper, Darkshore) and Blackfathom Villainy (Argent Guard Thaelrid, inside the dungeon).

Horde: Allegiance to the Old Gods, The Essence of Aku'mai and Amongst the Ruins (all with Je'neu Sancrea in Ashenvale), Baron Aquanis (from a Strange Water Globe dropped inside) and Blackfathom Villainy. Horde players loot the Fathom Stone to summon Baron Aquanis, and Lorgus Jett is also needed for Horde quests. Both are plain tank-and-spank fights with no special loot.

Class quests: The Orb of Soran'ruk for Warlocks and The Test of Righteousness for Alliance Paladins.

Loot highlights

Method lists drops per boss, including Ghamoo-Ra's Bind (cloth waist) from Ghamoo-Ra, Darkwater Talwar (one-hand sword) from Lady Sarevess, Cursed Murloc Eye (trinket) from Gelihast, Rod of the Sleepwalker (two-hand staff) from Kelris and Strike of the Hydra (two-hand sword) from Aku'mai. Gelihast can also drop the Fishing Rack blueprint. Warcraft Tavern says the loot was updated for Forever, so treat these as beta data.

The story of the sunken temple

Warcraft Wiki says the building was a night elf temple to Elune named Lathar'Lazal, built in ancient Kalimdor under Queen Azshara. The Great Sundering broke it and sank it beneath the sea. In modern times, according to the wiki, the Old Gods' corruption tainted its moonwell, Aku'mai rose from the water, and the Twilight's Hammer cult led by Kelris gathered there with the naga. The Argent Dawn sent Dawnwatcher Shaedlass and Scout Thaelrid to investigate, which is why Thaelrid appears in the quests above.

The wiki places these events in year 25 after the Dark Portal, the era of the first year of WoW, which is the time Forever is set in. If you want the wider story, read the lore primer. The free Lore Forever add-on gives readable background in zones as you play, and it is fan-made.
