Sylvanas Windrunner's Story Before WoW Forever

Sylvanas Windrunner was the Ranger-General of Silvermoon until Arthas killed her and raised her as a banshee, and she became the Dark Lady who leads the Forsaken from the Undercity. In WoW Forever's setting, the first year of World of Warcraft, that is where her story stands: she rules an undead nation under the ruins of Lordaeron's capital.

Quick answer: A high elf ranger from the Windrunner family. Arthas killed her during the Third War, then bound her as a banshee. When the Lich King's control weakened, she broke free, freed other undead and founded the Forsaken. She took the Undercity beneath the ruined Capital City and became its ruler.

Spoiler note

This article covers history before and during Forever's time. It leaves out later expansions, which are not part of Forever's story. If you want to meet her through quests, read only the first section.

A Windrunner of Quel'Thalas

Warcraft Wiki says Sylvanas was a high elf of the Windrunner family, from Windrunner Spire in Quel'Thalas. She was the middle sister between Alleria, the eldest, and Vereesa, the youngest, and her brother was Lirath. Her parents were Lireesa and Verath.

She joined the elven rangers and rose to Ranger-General of Silvermoon, succeeding her mother as military leader of the high elven forces. She also took a human ranger, Nathanos Marris, as a pupil, and he later became a champion of the Farstriders.

The Second War and the sisters' split

During the Second War, Alleria left to fight with the Alliance, and the two sisters became estranged. Sylvanas and her rangers stayed to defend Quel'Thalas against the Horde invaders who burned Quel'Thalas, and the Horde eventually withdrew.

The fall of Quel'Thalas

In the Third War, Arthas Menethil attacked Quel'Thalas with undead forces and broke through the elfgates. Sylvanas fought him at Fairbreeze Village and was impaled by Frostmourne. Read Who Is Arthas Menethil? for his side of the story.

She asked Arthas to kill her quickly. He did not. He ripped her soul back and made her a banshee, bound to his will but aware of what she did. Warcraft Wiki says Frostmourne fractured her soul, leaving a fragment frozen in time, and that her body was locked in an iron coffin in Deatholme.

Breaking free

Warcraft Wiki says that as Ner'zhul's control over the Scourge weakened, Sylvanas gained a degree of independence and joined plots by dreadlords against Arthas. She freed her body and tried to kill Arthas, but failed. She then freed other undead and became the leader of the new Forsaken. The wiki gives the Third War years as 20 to 21 after the Dark Portal.

Founding the Forsaken and the Undercity

She gathered freed undead and dark rangers into the Forsaken and ruled the Plaguelands. She then took the Undercity, built under the ruins of Capital City, and made it the Forsaken capital. Warcraft Wiki says the dreadlord Varimathras and other dreadlords helped her secure the region.

Sylvanas in Forever's time

Blizzard's official overview of WoW Forever, as summarized by Icy Veins, describes the Forsaken as free of the Lich King, led by Sylvanas and seeking vengeance against the Scourge. It says they distrust humans, who want to purge the undead, and see the Horde as a tool for their own goals.

Warcraft Wiki describes her situation in the first-year-of-WoW era this way:

  • She rules the Forsaken from the Undercity and holds Tirisfal Glades and parts of Lordaeron.
  • She oversees the Deathstalkers, the Royal Apothecary Society and its New Plague research.
  • She works with Varimathras to conquer human and dwarven lands in southern Lordaeron.
  • Forsaken forces are stationed in Quel'Thalas, especially Tranquillien.

Forever also adds Undead Paladins, a new race and class combination. For the class options, see the race and class guide. The free Lore Forever add-on gives readable background in Tirisfal Glades and the Undercity as you stand in them, and the optional Willo Windows companion lets you ask lore questions by voice. Both are fan-made, and quest text and Blizzard announcements still decide what is canon in Forever.

Events outside Forever

Warcraft Wiki places what happens to Sylvanas from The Burning Crusade onward in later expansion eras. We do not treat those events as Forever canon.
