Who Is Grom Hellscream? The Warsong Chieftain Who Drank the Demon's Blood

Grommash "Grom" Hellscream was the chieftain of the Warsong clan, the first orc to drink Mannoroth's demon blood, and the warrior who died killing Mannoroth in Ashenvale, which freed the orcs from the curse. He is long dead in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), but his name stands on Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar and on a monument in Demon Fall Canyon.

Quick answer: Grom led the Warsong clan on Draenor, drank the blood that bound the orcs to the Burning Legion, hid in exile, helped Thrall free the orcs from the internment camps and landed on Kalimdor with the first Horde. In Ashenvale he fell to the demon's blood again, was freed by Jaina's magic and died killing Mannoroth at Demon Fall Canyon.

Grom Hellscream's story, step by step — A six-step timeline of Grom Hellscream: chieftain of the Warsong clan, the first orc to drink Mannoroth's blood, exile in the Eastern Kingdoms and meeting Thrall, freeing the internment camps with Doomhammer and Thrall, the Warsong's lumber war and the death of Cenarius in Ashenvale, and his death killing Mannoroth at Demon Fall Canyon. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Engadget and the Vanilla WoW fan wiki.

Every people tells two stories about its heroes: the one that shames them and the one that saves them. For the orcs, both stories have the same man in them, and the second one ends in a canyon in Ashenvale.

Why is Grom Hellscream remembered as both villain and hero?

Grom is the orc who made the worst choice and then paid the whole price for it. Warcraft Wiki, Engadget's Know Your Lore and the Vanilla WoW fan wiki all say he was the first orc to drink the blood of the pit lord Mannoroth, and that the rest of the Horde followed. Warcraft Wiki says the curse bound the orcs to the Burning Legion. Engadget says the orcs under its influence took Shattrath and the other draenei cities.

Engadget adds that Gul'dan judged Grom too disruptive for the first wave of the invasion, so he watched the Horde march through the Dark Portal. Warcraft Wiki says Gul'dan kept Grom on Draenor, so the Warsong never fought the Alliance in the Second War. Read Who Is Gul'dan? for the man who set the trap, and The Orcs of Azeroth for the wider fall.

How did Grom help Thrall free the orcs?

Exile is a long school, and Grom's lasted years. Warcraft Wiki says the Warsong survived in hiding in the wilds of Lordaeron for nearly fifteen years, and Engadget says the remnants of the clan hid in the Eastern Kingdoms. Warcraft Wiki says Thrall sought Grom out and that Grom taught him the ways of the orcs.

Grom then joined the great rescue. Warcraft Wiki's account of the internment camps says Orgrim Doomhammer and Thrall led the liberation and that they joined with Grom and his Warsong clan. Engadget agrees that he helped Thrall free the orcs from the camps. Read Who Is Orgrim Doomhammer? and Who Is Thrall?.

What happened to Grom in Ashenvale?

The forest took its price. Warcraft Wiki says that after landing on Kalimdor the Warsong were sent to build an outpost in Ashenvale and rampaged through the forest instead, and that the night elves attacked them in response. Engadget says Thrall sent Grom north for lumber and that the felling of trees led to fighting, and the Vanilla WoW fan wiki also says the Warsong clashed with the night elves there. Engadget says the demigod Cenarius stepped in against the orcs. Warcraft Wiki says that after Grom and his troops drank from a fountain of demonic blood they killed Cenarius, and the fan wiki and Engadget give the same sequence.

Warcraft Wiki says Thrall brought the captured Grom to Jaina Proudmoore, whose magic-users freed him from the curse in a ritual, and Engadget says Jaina gave Thrall a Soul Gem to capture Grom's spirit. Grom and Thrall then hunted Mannoroth. Warcraft Wiki says Grom drove his axe Gorehowl into the demon, and that the explosion killed him, ending the curse on the orcs. Warcraft Wiki's Demon Fall Canyon page names the place, in Ashenvale south of Felfire Hill. Read Ashenvale explained for the forest, and Who Is Jaina Proudmoore? for the mage who freed him.

Where does Grom's legacy stand in WoW Forever's era?

A hero's legacy is whatever the living will not take down. Warcraft Wiki says the Horde's great hall in Orgrimmar is named Grommash Hold in his honor, and its Grommash Hold page says that in the original game it was Thrall's seat. The Vanilla WoW fan wiki agrees that Thrall holds court at Grommash Hold. Warcraft Wiki's Patch 1.60 page lists Orgrimmar in Forever as a transport hub and a dungeon location, Ragefire Chasm.

In Demon Fall Canyon, Warcraft Wiki says a monument to Grom stands with an inscription that begins "Here lies Grommash Hellscream." The fan wiki lists the monument under Grom's legacy in the original game, in southeastern Ashenvale. Ashenvale is a Forever zone, and the Ashenvale guide shows how Forever's version is set up. Warsong Gulch is also one of Forever's four battlegrounds, according to the battlegrounds guide. Warcraft Wiki links its Horde side to the Warsong clan and the Warsong Outriders, orcs who stayed after the Third War.

The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you travel, and the optional Willo voice companion lets you ask about the people whose names you read. Both are fan-made.

What happens to the Hellscream name later?

Grom's son, Garrosh, carries the name into events later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever. This article leaves them there so the first year of the game stays unspoiled.

What is not confirmed yet

Blizzard has not published a list of Forever's Grom quests or dialogue, so this article describes the character, not new content.
Sources disagree on whether Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale is named for him. The Vanilla WoW fan wiki and Warcraft Wiki's Grom page say it is named in his memory, while Warcraft Wiki's own Grom'gol page marks a link to Grom as unofficial speculation. This article does not claim it.
Warcraft Wiki's Patch 1.60 page does not mention Warsong Gulch, Demon Fall Canyon or the monument. Lore Forever takes Warsong Gulch from the battlegrounds guide and treats the others as unconfirmed for Forever.
