Darnassus Explained: Night Elf Capital, Temple of the Moon and Teldrassil

Darnassus is the night elf capital of the Alliance, built in the branches of the World Tree Teldrassil after the Third War and ruled by High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind from the Temple of the Moon. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, it is where Night Elf adventurers train, ride and trade.

Quick answer: Darnassus sits in Teldrassil, which druids led by Fandral Staghelm planted after the Third War. Reach it by the portal at Rut'theran Village, at the foot of the tree. It has a bank, an auction house, class trainers and, in Forever, the Night Elf riding trainer. Details as of October 25, 2026.

Darnassus at a glance
Darnassus is built in the branches of Teldrassil and has six districts: Warrior's Terrace with the gate and forge, the Temple Gardens with the bank, Craftsmen's Terrace with the inn, Tradesmen's Terrace with the auction house, the Cenarion Enclave with druid and hunter trainers and the riding trainer, and the Temple of the Moon, home of Tyrande and the Sisters of Elune.

The city hangs among living branches, with lantern light on bridges, a lake at its heart and a moonwell glowing in a temple that never seems to be empty. Everyone who sails to Kalimdor, sooner or later, comes to see it.

Why was Darnassus built in a tree?

Darnassus was built to honor the survival of the night elves. Warcraft Wiki says that after the Third War, druids led by Fandral Staghelm planted Teldrassil, and the capital was built in its branches. Blizzard Watch says Fandral became Arch Druid after Malfurion Stormrage vanished, and planted the tree to regain the immortality the night elves had lost when Nordrassil was weakened. Malfurion, according to Blizzard Watch, rejected the plan and withdrew into the Emerald Dream.

The great dragon Nozdormu refused to bless the new tree, a refusal both Warcraft Wiki and Blizzard Watch record. Furbolgs near the village of Dolanaar turned violent and satyrs appeared. For the older World Tree, read Nordrassil, the world tree, and for the people, night elves history.

What is inside Darnassus?

The city is arranged around a central lake with bridges and groves. Warcraft Wiki lists seven areas; the seventh, the Howling Oak, is tied to Gilnean worgen and belongs to a later era, so this guide leaves it out. The six districts that apply are:

  • Warrior's Terrace: the city gate, with a forge and anvil
  • The Temple Gardens: the bank
  • Craftsmen's Terrace: the inn
  • Tradesmen's Terrace: the auction house
  • The Cenarion Enclave: druid and hunter trainers
  • The Temple of the Moon: the seat of Tyrande and the Sisters of Elune

Warcraft Wiki adds that a flight master stands next to the portal. In Forever, Warcraft Tavern confirms a flight master, bank, Auction House and class and profession trainers, and Method and Warcraft Tavern place the Night Elf riding trainer Jartsam and saber vendor Lelanai in the city, with the first saber bought at about 38.5, 16.7. Warcraft Tavern says seven saber types are sold there. See the mounts guide.

What is the Temple of the Moon?

The Temple of the Moon is the heart of the city. Warcraft Wiki and Moon Guard Wiki agree that it is the center of night elf spiritual life, the home of the Sisterhood of Elune, and the seat of government for Darnassus and Teldrassil. At its center stands a statue of Haidene, the first High Priestess of the Moon, set in a moonwell whose blessed water heals. Warcraft Wiki notes that early players often thought the statue showed Elune herself.

Tyrande Whisperwind lives and rules here. Read her full story in Tyrande Whisperwind's story, and the goddess she serves in Elune explained.

How do you reach Darnassus in WoW Forever?

Night Elves begin in Teldrassil at Shadowglen and level to about level 10, according to Warcraft Tavern. Rut'theran Village stands at the southern base of the tree, and a portal inside it leads straight to Darnassus, according to Warcraft Wiki. In Forever, Warcraft Tavern says Teldrassil has a boat to Darkshore from Rut'theran Village, reached through a teleporter in Darnassus. Method lists Rut'theran Village and Auberdine as an Alliance route and the direct Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine ship as new. See the travel guide and the Teldrassil zone guide.

Is Darnassus a faction you can earn reputation with?

Yes. Warcraft Wiki says you gain Darnassus reputation by questing in Teldrassil, Darkshore, Ashenvale, Stonetalon Mountains, Feralas and Thousand Needles, and that at Exalted the saber mounts sold by Lelanai at the Cenarion Enclave open to other Alliance races. In Forever, Warcraft Tavern says Darnassus reputation also gives riding and mount discounts of 5 percent at Friendly, 10 at Honored, 15 at Revered and 20 at Exalted. For the surrounding forest, see Ashenvale explained.

What is not confirmed yet?

  • Quests and NPCs: this article uses original-game NPCs and districts; WoW Forever's own Darnassus quests are not fully documented in public guides.
  • Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever: a later expansion burns Teldrassil and Darnassus, according to MeinMMO's report on BlizzCon 2017 and Warcraft Wiki.
  • Level 31 and above: the beta stopped at level 30, so late-game use of the city is untested.

The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background as you stand in Darnassus and Teldrassil, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions; both are fan-made.
