Who Is Cairne Bloodhoof? The High Chieftain of Thunder Bluff Explained

Cairne Bloodhoof is the High Chieftain of the united tauren tribes, the Bloodhoof leader who brought his people to Mulgore, built Thunder Bluff and tied the tauren to Thrall's Horde. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Warcraft Tavern's Forever tauren guide says he still presides over Thunder Bluff.

Quick answer: Cairne's people were threatened by centaur raids, so he met Thrall, pledged the tauren to the Horde and fought beside the Darkspear trolls against Daelin Proudmoore in Dustwallow Marsh. He then settled the tribes on the mesas of Mulgore. His son is Baine. His death comes later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever.

Cairne Bloodhoof's story, step by step
A six-step timeline of Cairne Bloodhoof: chieftain of the Bloodhoof tauren, centaur raids threaten his people, he meets Thrall and pledges the tauren to the Horde, fights Daelin Proudmoore's forces in Dustwallow Marsh, builds Thunder Bluff in Mulgore as High Chieftain, and presides over Thunder Bluff in the first year of WoW. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Blizzard Watch and Warcraft Tavern.

Some leaders are remembered for the wars they won. Cairne is remembered for the home he found, a wind-swept country of grass and standing stone where a scattered people could finally gather around one fire.

Who is Cairne Bloodhoof?

Cairne is the tauren's greatest chieftain, a veteran with a warrior's spear and a diplomat's patience. Warcraft Wiki calls him High Chieftain of the united tauren tribes of Mulgore and the last wielder of the Bloodhoof Runespear. Blizzard Watch's Know Your Lore column says representatives of many tribes settled in Thunder Bluff as it was built, among them tribes from Feralas, Desolace, Thousand Needles and the Barrens, and that Cairne became High Chieftain after the Third War.

Warcraft Wiki and Blizzard Watch both name his son as Baine. Warcraft Wiki names his childhood friend as the druid Hamuul Runetotem, and Blizzard Watch says Hamuul's friendship with the night elf archdruid Malfurion Stormrage is how the tauren learned the druidic arts. For that friendship, read Who Is Malfurion Stormrage?.

How did Cairne found Thunder Bluff?

The tauren found their home by being driven from the old one. Warcraft Wiki says centaur raids pushed Cairne to look for a new land for his people, and its Thunder Bluff page says Cairne and the Bloodhoof tribe, helped by Thrall's Horde, drove back the centaur and claimed Mulgore during the Third War, in year 21. Warcraft Wiki's Mulgore page agrees that Cairne led the tauren to the grasslands with Thrall's escort and built the city on the mesas.

Cairne did not build only for his own tribe. Warcraft Wiki says he built Thunder Bluff as a refuge for tauren of every tribe, and that over time the scattered tribes united under his rule. One guest was uneasy. Blizzard Watch says the Grimtotem tribe, led by Magatha Grimtotem, was among the tribes that joined him but was contentious, and Warcraft Wiki says Cairne let Magatha stay in the Elder Rise on the principle of keeping enemies close.

Why did the tauren join the Horde?

A debt, in the tauren telling, is a promise. Warcraft Tavern's Forever tauren guide says the centaur attacked the tauren, orcs helped defeat them, and the tauren joined the Horde to honor that debt. Warcraft Wiki says Cairne pledged his race's loyalty to the Horde, and Blizzard Watch says he believed the tauren's future lay with Thrall.

The pledge was tested at once. Warcraft Wiki says Cairne joined Rexxar's band of warriors and helped repel Admiral Proudmoore's Kul Tiras forces in Dustwallow Marsh. Blizzard Watch adds that he fought alongside Vol'jin and the Darkspear trolls there, and that the fight convinced him the tauren and the trolls had much to offer each other. Where do you meet Cairne Bloodhoof in WoW Forever?

You meet him at the top of the world he built. Warcraft Tavern's Forever tauren guide says Mulgore is the tauren starting zone, that Thunder Bluff is the Horde's most convenient capital, and that Cairne Bloodhoof presides over it. The same guide says leveling in Mulgore takes you to about level 10 before the road leads into the Barrens, and that Forever's Thunder Bluff has no zeppelin to Orgrimmar, so you travel between capitals on foot.

Warcraft Wiki's Thunder Bluff page says Cairne presided over the city in the original game, and its Cairne page places him in the High Rise. Hamuul Runetotem is found in the Elder Rise, according to the Thunder Bluff page. For the zone you start in, read the Mulgore guide. For the Horde's routes to the Barrens and beyond, read the Horde leveling zones guide and the travel guide. For why the tauren and the Alliance stand where they do, see Alliance vs Horde: the lore.

The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you walk the mesas, and the optional Willo voice companion lets you ask about the people you meet there. Both are fan-made.

What happens to Cairne later?

Cairne's story ends later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, in a challenge over the Horde's leadership. This article leaves it there so the first year of the game stays unspoiled.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not published a list of Forever's Cairne quests or dialogue, so this article describes the character, not new content.
  • Warcraft Wiki's Patch 1.60 page, which summarizes Forever's content, does not mention Thunder Bluff and lists Mulgore only as a transport link. Warcraft Tavern's Forever tauren guide describes Mulgore as the tauren start zone and Thunder Bluff as the capital. Lore Forever follows the guide and flags the gap.
  • Warcraft Wiki's Cairne page places him in the High Rise, but its Thunder Bluff page does not say where he stands.
