Who Is Thrall? The Warchief of the Horde Explained
Thrall, born Go'el, is the orc shaman and Warchief of the Horde who freed his people from the human internment camps and founded Durotar and Orgrimmar on Kalimdor. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), he is the Horde's leader in Orgrimmar.
Quick answer: Thrall was raised as a gladiator slave by the human lord Aedelas Blackmoore. He escaped, learned shamanism from the Frostwolf clan, took over as Warchief when Orgrim Doomhammer died, led the orcs to Kalimdor and fought at the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Players meet him as the Warchief of the Horde.

Why is Thrall called Thrall?
Thrall was born Go'el, the son of Durotan and Draka of the Frostwolf clan. Warcraft Wiki says his parents were killed by assassins sent by Gul'dan shortly after his birth. The human Aedelas Blackmoore found the infant and named him Thrall. Engadget's Know Your Lore column says the name means "slave" and that Blackmoore told the boy it meant he belonged to Blackmoore.
Blackmoore raised him at Durnholde Keep as a gladiator. Warcraft Wiki says Taretha Foxton, the daughter of his human wet-nurse, helped him escape. Taretha delivered books and secret notes, according to Engadget.
How did Thrall become Warchief?
After his escape, Thrall met the orc Grom Hellscream and then found the Frostwolf clan. Wikipedia says Drek'Thar, the clan's leader, taught him shamanism, and Warcraft Wiki says Drek'Thar taught him the old ways of the Horde. Engadget says Orgrim Doomhammer took Thrall under his wing as second in command and wanted the orcs freed from the internment camps.
Doomhammer died during the attack that freed the camps. Wikipedia says he named Thrall Warchief and passed on his black armor and war hammer. The Vanilla WoW Archive adds that Thrall's first act as Warchief was to attack Durnholde, where Blackmoore died. The orcs the camps had held were lethargic, Engadget says, because they were cut off from the demonic energy that had once driven them. Read The Orcs of Azeroth for that history.
What did Thrall do on Kalimdor?
Warcraft Wiki says Thrall led the orcs west to Kalimdor, allied with the Darkspear trolls and the Bloodhoof tauren, and fought at Mount Hyjal against the Burning Legion. Warcraft Wiki's Durotar page puts that battle in year 21 after the Dark Portal and says Thrall then led the orcs, with tauren help, to the land he named Durotar. The capital, Orgrimmar, was in place by year 25.
Durotar and Orgrimmar carry two names from his past: his father Durotan and his mentor Doomhammer. For the zone itself, see Durotar in WoW Forever. Mount Hyjal is also a new Forever zone, so the end of the Third War is where some of Forever's newest content is set. Read the Mount Hyjal guide.
Where is Thrall in WoW Forever's era?
Warcraft Wiki's account of the original World of Warcraft has Thrall as Warchief of the Horde, ruling from Orgrimmar. He has accepted the Forsaken, who gained the Horde access to Lordaeron, and made a pact with the Revantusk trolls. The Vanilla WoW Archive also places him in Orgrimmar before the Cataclysm.
Blizzard's own overview of WoW Forever, as summarized by Icy Veins, calls the Horde "an alliance of convenience against a hostile world." That fits Thrall's position: the orcs, Darkspear trolls, tauren and Forsaken do not all trust each other. Warcraft Wiki says Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof stayed suspicious of the Forsaken's motives. Read The Forsaken Explained and Alliance vs Horde: the lore for the wider picture.
Which Thrall is it: Warcraft III or World of Warcraft?
Wikipedia says Thrall's first major appearance was in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002). Warcraft Wiki says he leads the orcs to safety in that game's Orc campaign and is a Far Seer unit there. It also separates the two eras: the Third War, Mount Hyjal and the founding of Durotar belong to the Warcraft III storyline, while Orgrimmar, the Forsaken alliance and the Revantusk pact belong to the World of Warcraft era.
The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you play, and the optional Willo voice companion lets you ask lore questions about characters like Thrall. Both are fan-made, and quest text and Blizzard announcements still decide what is canon in Forever.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard has not published a list of Forever's Thrall quests or dialogue, so this article describes the character, not new content.
- Sources disagree on the year of his birth: Warcraft Wiki records year 1, the Vanilla WoW Archive says 2.
- Sources disagree on where in Orgrimmar he sits. Warcraft Wiki's Thrall page says his palace is in the Valley of Wisdom, while its Orgrimmar page calls that a tauren district and describes Grommash Hold as the place the warchief watches over his people from.
- Later events, including Thrall stepping down before the Cataclysm, are outside WoW Forever.
