Who Is Malfurion Stormrage? Shan'do, the First Druid Asleep in the Emerald Dream

Malfurion Stormrage, called Shan'do, is the night elf Archdruid and twin brother of Illidan, a druid taught by Cenarius who in the first year of World of Warcraft lies lost in the Emerald Dream. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), the new Barrow Deeps raid, opening December 9, descends into the prison that Warcraft Tavern says held Illidan for ten thousand years.

Quick answer: Malfurion learned druidism from Cenarius, helped end the War of the Ancients, slept in the Emerald Dream for thousands of years, and was woken by Tyrande to fight the Third War. After Mount Hyjal he went back into the Dream and did not wake. Fandral Staghelm led the druids in his place.

Some sleepers dream for a whole people. Somewhere beneath the leaves of Moonglade, a druid breathes slowly and the green world holds its breath with him.

Who is Malfurion Stormrage?

Engadget says Cenarius taught Malfurion druidic magic and how to walk the Emerald Dream. Warcraft Wiki names Cenarius and Ysera as his mentors and calls him the first mortal druid. It also says "Shan'do" means "honored teacher" in Darnassian, a detail no other page we read gives. Read the night elves' history.

What did Malfurion do in the War of the Ancients?

Ten thousand years ago the night elves nearly lost the world. Engadget says Malfurion used the Emerald Dream to interfere with the portal at the Well of Eternity and persuaded Illidan to help close it, after which the Sundering split Kalimdor. Warcraft Wiki confirms that the original Well of Eternity was destroyed. Both say the dragons gave or helped create a World Tree, and that the druids went back to sleep to tend the Emerald Dream; Engadget adds that Malfurion watched over the Well that way for thousands of years. For the tree, see Nordrassil, the World Tree.

Where did Illidan end up?

The two accounts differ. Warcraft Wiki says Malfurion imprisoned Illidan in the Barrow Deeps. Engadget says Malfurion spoke in Illidan's defense, so he was imprisoned for life underground rather than executed. Read Illidan's story.

What did Malfurion do in the Third War?

When orcs, the Scourge and the Burning Legion threatened the world, Engadget and Warcraft Wiki say Tyrande woke him, and Warcraft Wiki says he sounded the Horn of Cenarius to wake the druids. Warcraft Wiki says he sounded it again at Mount Hyjal, the Ancestral Guardians destroyed Archimonde, and the World Tree was shattered, ending night elf immortality. Warcraft Tavern's Forever night elf guide also says Tyrande, Malfurion and Illidan helped defeat Archimonde. See Tyrande's story and the Mount Hyjal guide.

Why is Malfurion asleep in WoW Forever's era?

Blizzard Watch says Malfurion returned to the Emerald Dream after the Third War and did not awaken, so Fandral Staghelm became Archdruid and persuaded the druids to plant Teldrassil, which Malfurion had opposed. Warcraft Wiki says his dreamstate went wrong and he became trapped, and that he stayed comatose through the original game. Warcraft Wiki also says the Stormrage Barrow Dens in Moonglade, where druids slumber in the Dream, are named for him, and that the Cenarion Circle and the Sisterhood of Elune cared for his body. For the goddess the druids and priestesses serve, see Elune explained.

Where does WoW Forever touch Malfurion's story?

Warcraft Tavern says the Barrow Deeps is a level 60 raid beneath Kalimdor with eight bosses and three entrances: through Mount Hyjal, Winterspring and Blackmaw Hold. It describes the Deeps as a prison that held Illidan for ten thousand years, now opened. Warcraft Wiki's Forever patch notes list it as a new 10-player raid in Mount Hyjal, unlocking December 9. Warcraft Wiki warns the Barrow Deeps are a different place from the Barrow Dens. Hyjal Summit, a 20-player raid at the peak of Mount Hyjal near Nordrassil, opens the same day. See the WoW Forever raids guide. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and adds readable zone background.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not said whether Forever shows Malfurion, or that he is asleep, in any quest or raid.
  • A games.gg guide says Moonglade is playable in Forever, but built from Classic data, and treats Malfurion's location there as a guess.
  • "First mortal druid" and the meaning of "Shan'do" come from Warcraft Wiki alone among the pages read.
  • Sources differ on whether Malfurion imprisoned Illidan or defended him.
  • Later events, including Malfurion's awakening, are outside WoW Forever.
