Who Is Tyrande Whisperwind? High Priestess of Elune and Ruler of Darnassus

Tyrande Whisperwind is the High Priestess of Elune and leader of the night elves, who led her people through ten thousand years of vigil while the druids slept, woke them for the Third War and now rules from Darnassus. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, Warcraft Tavern calls her the Alliance leader of the night elves, based in Darnassus.

Quick answer: Tyrande grew up beside the twins Malfurion and Illidan, became High Priestess in the War of the Ancients, led the Sentinels through the long vigil, woke Malfurion for the Third War and stood with Jaina and Thrall at Mount Hyjal. With Malfurion lost in the Emerald Dream, she leads alone.

Under the silver moon the oldest of the night elves keeps her vigil. When Tyrande speaks the Sentinels listen, and the moon seems to listen too.

Who is Tyrande Whisperwind and where did she come from?

Warcraft Wiki and Engadget agree that Tyrande grew up in Suramar with the twins Malfurion and Illidan and became a priestess of the Sisters of Elune. Both say she was named High Priestess after Dejahna died in the War of the Ancients. Both also say she was nearly killed in her strike on Azshara's palace; Warcraft Wiki places this just before the Well of Eternity was destroyed in the Sundering. Read the night elves' history and who Elune is.

What did Tyrande do during the long vigil?

While the druids slept, someone had to stand the watch. Warcraft Wiki says Tyrande did not sleep: she led the reformed Sentinels and protected Kalimdor for over ten thousand years. Engadget says she led a shattered people for thousands of years, and calls her the oldest living native racial leader on Azeroth.

What was Tyrande's role in the Third War?

According to Warcraft Wiki, Tyrande led attacks on the Warsong clan in Ashenvale, recovered the Horn of Cenarius on the Moonglade and woke Malfurion. Engadget gives her reason for waking the druids: she did not "have the luxury of sleeping through times of great peril." Both say she freed Illidan against Malfurion's opposition, and that she allied with Jaina Proudmoore and Thrall. Warcraft Wiki's Durotar page dates the Battle of Mount Hyjal to year 21 after the Dark Portal. Engadget says the World Tree was destroyed, which ended the night elves' immortality, and Warcraft Wiki's Malfurion page agrees. See Illidan's story and the Mount Hyjal guide.

Where is Tyrande in WoW Forever's era?

Warcraft Wiki says Malfurion's spirit was lost in the Emerald Dream after the Third War, Fandral Staghelm planted Teldrassil, and Tyrande became sole leader of the night elves. Warcraft Tavern's Forever night elf guide says Darnassus is the night elf capital and Tyrande is based there.

Warcraft Wiki says the Temple of the Moon in Darnassus is a temple to Elune and the home of the Sisters of Elune, and that it also served as a seat of government. The allthings.how guide, written for Classic, says Tyrande stands inside it, up a spiral ramp, reached by the portal at Rut'theran Village. The Teldrassil starting zone is covered in the Alliance leveling guide and the first ten levels. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable quest background there, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions by voice. Both are fan-made.

Which Tyrande is it: Warcraft III or World of Warcraft?

Engadget says most of her appearances have been in novels and Warcraft III. Warcraft Wiki separates the Third War, which belongs to Warcraft III, from her role in World of Warcraft as sole leader in Darnassus. Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, she goes to the Emerald Dream to rescue Malfurion, and the two marry, according to Warcraft Wiki and Engadget.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not published a list of Tyrande's Forever dialogue or quests; this article describes the character, not new content.
  • One community guide lists a level 60 raid chain opener called "Tyrande and Remulos," but its own verdict is to skip it until Forever confirms the chain.
  • Warcraft Wiki's Tyrande page gives no year for Mount Hyjal; the year 21 comes from its Durotar page.
  • The allthings.how route to her is written for Classic and may differ in Forever.
