Nordrassil Explained: The World Tree of Mount Hyjal and Its Fall
Nordrassil, the "Crown of the Heavens," is the night elves' first World Tree, grown on the summit of Mount Hyjal over the second Well of Eternity and gravely damaged when Archimonde was destroyed there in year 21 after the Dark Portal. The night elves lost their immortality in that blast. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set four years later, Mount Hyjal is a new zone in recovery, and the Hyjal Summit raid unlocks on December 9, 2026.
Quick answer: Nordrassil grew from the seed of a lost Mother Tree, three Dragon Aspects blessed it, and the night elves gained immortality while it stood. At the Battle of Mount Hyjal the wisps and the Aspects' blessings destroyed Archimonde and wrecked the tree's power. Teldrassil is a different tree.

A great tree once stood on a mountain in Kalimdor, and it was more than a tree. It was a promise, kept by roots, that the people who lived beneath it would not die.

What is Nordrassil?
Nordrassil was the first World Tree. Warcraft Wiki says it stood on the Well of Eternity at the summit of Mount Hyjal, and Wowpedia says it was planted there after the War of the Ancients. Blizzard Watch's lore piece on the battle says the Well beneath it was the second Well of Eternity, which Illidan Stormrage had made from vials taken from the first. Read Night Elf History and Illidan Stormrage's story for the background.
Who grew Nordrassil, and what did the blessings give?
Warcraft Wiki says Alexstrasza grew it from an acorn of the Mother Tree G'Hanir, and Wowpedia says it grew from a seed of G'Hanir without naming who planted it. Warcraft Wiki says Ysera bound the tree and the druids to the Emerald Dream and that Nozdormu ensured the night elves would stay immortal while the tree lived. Blizzard Watch says three Aspects, Alexstrasza, Ysera and Nozdormu, blessed it and tied it to the night elves, giving them strength, vitality, access to the Dream and immortality.
What happened at the Battle of Mount Hyjal?
Archimonde marched up the road to Nordrassil to take the second Well. Warcraft Wiki's page on the battle says Malfurion Stormrage planned to ignite the tree and had the mortal armies buy him time. Blizzard Watch says Tyrande woke him from the Emerald Dream, and that the three camps were led by Jaina Proudmoore, Thrall and the night elves. Read Jaina Proudmoore's story, Thrall's story and Malfurion Stormrage's story.
When Archimonde reached the tree, Malfurion sounded the Horn of Cenarius. Thousands of wisps poured their energy into the tree's enchantments, and the blast destroyed Archimonde. Warcraft Wiki dates the battle to year 21, and says the night elves lost their immortality because the enchantments from the Dragon Aspects were gone.
Did Nordrassil survive?
The sources disagree on how badly it was hurt. Warcraft Wiki's battle page says Nordrassil was severely weakened but survived and its roots began to regrow, and its tree page says it was heavily damaged. Wowpedia says the tree was devastated, and Blizzard Watch says Nordrassil was destroyed. Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia both say the night elves lost their immortality, and Blizzard Watch implies it.
Is Teldrassil the same tree?
No. Warcraft Wiki says Fandral Staghelm believed planting Teldrassil would restore night elf immortality, and that it was not blessed by Nozdormu. Wowpedia says the same about Nozdormu and adds that Alexstrasza and Ysera blessed it later. Teldrassil is the island home of Darnassus; Nordrassil is on Mount Hyjal.
Where do you meet Nordrassil in WoW Forever?
Blizzard describes Mount Hyjal as a new region where players explore the aftermath of Archimonde's defeat, travel through Darkwhisper Gorge and help restore the land. Warcraft Tavern's report on the BlizzCon zones says the forest is slowly reviving, with questlines, a few reputations and two raids planned, but does not mention Nordrassil. Warcraft Wiki says the mountain spans Hyjal proper, Winterspring, Moonglade and Felwood, with the summit holding the World Tree, and Warcraft Tavern places the Hyjal Summit raid at the summit near Nordrassil. Read the Mount Hyjal guide for the zone and the raids that arrive on December 9. The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone background as you play, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Both are fan-made.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether players can see or visit Nordrassil in Forever's Mount Hyjal is not stated by Blizzard or the sources we read.
- Sources disagree on whether Nordrassil was destroyed or survived badly damaged.
- Warcraft Wiki's tree page covers later events, including the tree's later regrowth, attacks and the Emerald Dream portal at its roots. Those are later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever.
