Who Is Cenarius? The Demigod Who Taught the Druids, Explained
Cenarius is the demigod Lord of the Forest, the son of the moon goddess Elune and Malorne, raised by the dragon Ysera, who taught Malfurion Stormrage and the night elves the ways of the druids. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, his death at orc hands lies years in the past.
Quick answer: Cenarius was born of a goddess and Malorne, grew up in the Emerald Dream, and became the teacher of the first night elf druid. The orcs of Grom Hellscream killed him in Ashenvale, years before WoW Forever begins.

Who is Cenarius?
A demigod with a goddess for a mother. Warcraft Wiki says Cenarius is the son of Elune and Malorne, and that Ysera raised him in the Emerald Dream, so that many of the elder races took the two for mother and son. Engadget's Know Your Lore column on Cenarius, Malorne and Ysera tells the same line of descent through the tauren myth of the White Stag and the Moon, and says Ysera was not his mother by birth. Read Elune explained for the goddess.
What did Cenarius do in the War of the Ancients?
He lost his father. Warcraft Wiki says Archimonde killed Malorne, after which Cenarius served as a commander of Kalimdor's forces. Engadget says demons of the Burning Legion attacked Cenarius, that Malorne fought to protect him, and that Archimonde later killed Malorne. For the demons, read the Burning Legion explained.
How did Cenarius teach the druids?
By choosing one student. Warcraft Wiki says Cenarius taught the night elves to embrace nature, chose Malfurion as his student, and that Malfurion alone became the first mortal druid. Engadget says that after the War of the Ancients and the Sundering Cenarius began teaching the night elves in earnest, and that he saw potential in Malfurion. Read Who Is Malfurion Stormrage?, the night elves' history and the Druid class guide.
What is the story of Cenarius's son Zaetar?
A son who loved the wrong princess. Warcraft Wiki and Engadget both say Zaetar and the earth elemental princess Theradras produced the centaur. Engadget lists five centaur tribes, Magram, Kolkar, Galak, Gelkis and Maraudine, and adds that another jealous son attacked Cenarius and was cursed, a tale Warcraft Wiki's page does not repeat.
How did Cenarius die?
At the hands of an orc he had no reason to fear. Warcraft Wiki says Grom Hellscream and his demon-tainted orcs killed Cenarius in Ashenvale, and that Fel magic from a fountain tainted by Mannoroth let them fight him on equal footing. Engadget says Grom's orcs, who had drunk Mannoroth's blood, killed him. Read Who Is Grom Hellscream? and the Ashenvale guide.
Where do you meet Cenarius in WoW Forever?
You do not. Cenarius is killed by the orcs, years before the first year of World of Warcraft, and no source Lore Forever opened places him in WoW Forever. His legacy is the druid path itself. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable zone and quest background, and the optional Willo voice companion can talk through the lore. Both are fan-made.
What happens to Cenarius later?
Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, Warcraft Wiki lists him returning in several stories. This article leaves those unspoiled.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard has not published Forever-specific Cenarius content.
- Timing of his death: Warcraft Wiki places it during the orcs' invasion of Kalimdor in the Warcraft III era, while Engadget says it came shortly before the Third War.
- Engadget's story of a jealous son cursed by Cenarius, and its five centaur tribes, appear in only one source Lore Forever opened.
