Who Was Uther the Lightbringer? The First Paladin Explained

Uther the Lightbringer was the first leader of the Knights of the Silver Hand, the paladin who taught Prince Arthas the Light and refused to help him purge Stratholme, and who fell to Arthas and Frostmourne during the Third War. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, Uther is long dead, and what a player finds of him is his tomb in the Western Plaguelands.

Quick answer: Uther trained under Archbishop Alonsus Faol and helped found the Silver Hand. He fought in the Second War, mentored Arthas, refused to kill the people of Stratholme and was killed protecting the urn of King Terenas's ashes. His tomb is in the Western Plaguelands, south of Andorhal.

Uther the Lightbringer's story in six steps
A six-step timeline of Uther: student of Alonsus Faol, first leader of the Silver Hand, hero of the Second War, mentor of Arthas, refuser of the Stratholme purge, and killed by Arthas at Andorhal. His tomb is in the Western Plaguelands. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Engadget, Blizzard Watch.

The Light has a long memory in Lordaeron, and Uther is where much of it begins. Before the plague, before the fall of the capital, there was a knight who believed that faith could be carried onto a battlefield, and who tried to teach a prince what that faith asked of him.

Key facts

  • Teacher: Archbishop Alonsus Faol, who recruited Uther and four others into the new order (Warcraft Wiki, Engadget)
  • Order: the Knights of the Silver Hand, with Uther as its first leader and often called the first paladin (Warcraft Wiki, Engadget, Blizzard Watch)
  • Title "Lightbringer": given by Turalyon in the Second War, after the siege of Blackrock Spire per Warcraft Wiki and at the foot of Blackrock Mountain per Engadget
  • Student: Prince Arthas Menethil, whom Uther trained in the Light (Warcraft Wiki, Engadget, Blizzard Watch)

  • Resting place: Uther's Tomb in the Western Plaguelands (Warcraft Wiki, Blizzard Watch, Engadget)

How did Uther become the first paladin?

Warcraft Wiki says Uther was a devout follower of the Light from his youth and a student of Alonsus Faol. Engadget's Know Your Lore column adds that the Holy Order of Northshire was nearly wiped out in the First War, and that Uther and Faol then recruited survivors to found the Knights of the Silver Hand. Warcraft Wiki names the others Faol recruited as Turalyon, Tirion Fordring, Saidan Dathrohan and Gavinrad the Dire.

What did Uther do in the Second War?

Warcraft Wiki and Engadget agree that Uther helped expose Alterac's betrayal of the Alliance. Engadget's Second War column names the traitor as Aiden Perenolde, the head of Alterac. Warcraft Wiki says Uther aided Anduin Lothar in the final battle at Blackrock Spire, that Turalyon named him "Lightbringer" after the siege, and that he then led the final assault on the Burning Blade clan at the Dark Portal with Turalyon. Engadget places the naming in the battle at the foot of Blackrock Mountain. Blizzard Watch also places him at Blackrock Spire and at the Dark Portal assault.

Why did Uther refuse to purge Stratholme?

Uther mentored Arthas. When the plague had taken hold of Stratholme, Arthas ordered the city purged. Engadget says Uther refused to kill people who were not yet undead, and Blizzard Watch says he was unwilling to kill innocents. Arthas then accused him of treason and declared the Silver Hand disbanded. Read The Story of Arthas Menethil for the rest of that road.

How did Uther die?

After Arthas murdered King Terenas, Blizzard Watch says Uther took the urn holding the king's ashes to protect it. Engadget places the duel at Andorhal, and Warcraft Wiki says Arthas killed him there with Frostmourne. Warcraft Wiki's Andorhal page says Uther fell on the road outside the city. Read Who Was King Terenas Menethil? for the king's side of the story.

Where is Uther's Tomb?

Blizzard Watch says a tomb dedicated to Uther stands in the Western Plaguelands, and Engadget puts it in the far south of the zone. Warcraft Wiki locates it at Sorrow Hill, south of the ruins of Andorhal and east of Chillwind Camp, tended by the priest Thel'danis. Games.gg publishes a WoW Forever Western Plaguelands leveling guide, so the zone is part of the game, though Lore Forever has not seen a source describing Uther's tomb in Forever's version.

Where does Uther's story touch WoW Forever?

Strahnbrad, the Alterac Mountains town Warcraft Wiki says Uther and Arthas were sent to when orcs raided it, appears in Forever as a Syndicate town, according to Games.gg; see Hillsbrad Foothills and Strahnbrad. The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you travel, and the optional Willo voice companion can answer lore questions. Both are fan-made. Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, Uther's spirit appears again at the tomb in later expansions.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not published Uther quests or dialogue for Forever, so this article describes the character, not new content.
  • Sources describe the Silver Hand's founding differently: Warcraft Wiki says Faol recruited five founders, Blizzard Watch calls Uther the first paladin of the order without saying he founded it.
  • Sorrow Hill and Thel'danis come from Warcraft Wiki alone.
  • Lore Forever has not found a source on how Forever's Western Plaguelands tomb differs from the original game.
