Lore Forever Narrator Voices Explained: How They Are Made

The Lore Forever add-on's two main narrators, the included male narrator and the optional female narrator, are generated voices rendered from the story text, not voice actors, while volunteers record other voices that you can install beside them. A voice that has no recording for a story hands it to the next voice in your order, and anything with no recording stays readable text.

Quick answer: Stories are written text first. The project renders them as recordings, checks them, and ships the audio files inside the add-on, so nothing is spoken by your computer's text-to-speech. You pick and order voices in Options or with /lore voice. Lore Forever is our own fan-made project.

How a Lore Forever narration is made: story text is chosen from complete safe sections, rendered by a generated voice or recorded by a volunteer, checked against the text, shipped as an audio file, and played in your chosen voice order, with text as the last fallback.

Key facts

  • Narrators: the included male narrator and the optional female narrator are generated voices, not voice actors (Lore Forever FAQ)
  • Length: about 12 hours of lore stories per narrator; optional quest dialogue adds about 16 hours (Lore Forever FAQ)
  • Playback: all recordings, never your system's text-to-speech (Lore Forever FAQ)
  • Contributors page, November 2: the default male narrator lists 879 narrations, the female narrator 197

Who are the narrators?

The FAQ says the bundled male narrator and optional female narrator are "synthetic narration rendered from the text, tuned until names and places sound right". Other voices come from players. The Contributors page lists a Spanish narrator with 804 narrations and a Ukrainian narrator with 808, among others. On whether the lore itself is machine-drafted, the FAQ is direct: the entries are "drafted with AI from those sources, then checked", and "They aren't hand-written, and we don't claim they are."

How are the generated voices made?

Per the project documentation (checkout dated October 22), the narration is rendered locally on a graphics card (GPU), with a pronunciation dictionary respelling names. A queue checks each render automatically and retakes failures; the documentation calls these word checks, which we read as comparing the spoken words with the text. This article names no vendor or model.

How is a story's text chosen?

The documentation says new story renders use the title, the summary and every section whose spoiler flag is zero, without the old 1,900-character limit. So a recorded story covers complete spoiler-safe sections, and flagged sections are left out. Older recordings stay as a fallback until a complete replacement is recorded. The November 1 release notes (0.35.0) say the stories of the starting lands and the zones after them were rewritten and read anew in both narrators' voices.

What are the checks and hashes, in plain words?

A hash is a short code made from a piece of text. Per the documentation, each recording keeps the code of the text it was read from. For the project's own narrators, a recording whose text has since changed falls back to text until it is re-recorded. The volunteer narrator guide says the same: a changed text marks your recording out of date and the default voice takes over for that narration.

How do volunteers record?

The narrator guide supplies a clip list with the exact words, asks for MP3 at 64 kbps or higher or OGG Vorbis, and says the upload page turns away files such as phone-call quality, heavy clipping or a lot of background noise. Contributors must be 18 or older, are unpaid, choose their credit line, and release recordings under CC BY-SA 4.0 (narrator release, version 2026-10-03). The release says Lore Forever itself will not make a synthetic copy from those recordings. A separate "Lend your voice" page, a roughly three-minute reading, says the project then makes a narrator from your voice, credited to you, and you can withdraw.

Which languages exist?

Text packs exist for German, Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese. CurseForge lists narrator packs for several languages as separate downloads, and recorded quest dialogue in English, German and French. Sources differ on Spanish and Portuguese: CurseForge's text calls those narrator stories text only for now, while the Contributors page lists a Spanish narrator. Check the Downloads page.

How do you install a voice and choose the best one?

The Downloads page has The add-on (male narrator, 315 MB), Storyteller (1.6 GB, recommended) and Everything (2.9 GB, adds quest dialogue), as of November 2. Choose voices in Options, AddOns, Lore Forever, Narration voices, or type /lore voice, and set your order. Narration can be set to play only when you press Play (an option, off by default per the project documentation). No ranking is made here; the narrator release says a short sample of each pack goes on the Downloads page. See the add-on guide, quest voice add-ons and how to get voices for NPCs.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on is the source of these voices, fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. Willo is a separate companion app with her own studio, finest and Moonwell voices, and she can be wrong. See the Willo guide.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The documentation checkout is dated October 22 and may lag the live system.
  • Counts and sizes change with each release.
  • Recording coverage per zone, and whether every story is re-recorded, is not published in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Are Lore Forever narrators voice actors?

No. The included male narrator and optional female narrator are generated voices; other voices are volunteer players.

Does Lore Forever use text-to-speech while I play?

No. Narration is pre-recorded audio, so it does not depend on your system's text-to-speech voices.

Can I choose a different narrator?

Yes. Install voices from Downloads, then pick and order them in Options or with /lore voice.

What happens if a voice has no recording?

The story passes to the next voice in your order, and with no recording it shows as text.

Can I record a narrator voice?

Yes, if you are 18 or older. The narrator guide and "Lend your voice" page explain both ways.
