Shamanism and the Earthen Ring Explained: WoW Shaman Lore
In Warcraft lore, shamanism is the spiritual art of asking the elements of earth, air, fire and water for their power, and the Earthen Ring is the neutral order of shaman that keeps those elements in balance. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), launched on November 4, 2026, Warcraft Wiki places the Earthen Ring at Camp Gev'rek in Mulgore, and Method lists Shaman as playable for Dwarf, Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne characters.
Quick answer: A shaman is a mediator, not a master: Blizzard says the elements are chaotic unless a shaman brings balance. The orcs lost the art on Draenor, Thrall revived it, and the tauren-founded Earthen Ring carries it on.
A shaman walks into a storm and does not ask it to stop. She asks what it wants in return.
Key facts
- What shaman do: act as moderators among earth, fire, water and air, which are chaotic (Blizzard class page, Warcraft Wiki)
- Earthen Ring: founded by the tauren, about 230 years before the Dark Portal (Warcraft Wiki)
- Forever base: Camp Gev'rek, Skywatcher Plateau, northwestern Mulgore (Warcraft Wiki; wow-professions.com)
- Shaman races: Dwarf, Orc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Method; Blizzard for Horde Skyborne)
What is shamanism in Warcraft?
Warcraft Wiki defines shamanism as elemental magic involving a bond with natural and elemental spirits, and says shaman honor elementals rather than enslave them. Blizzard's Shaman class page, written for modern WoW, says the elements are chaotic and rage against one another, and that shaman are moderators who summon totems. The wiki quotes Drek'Thar telling Thrall that the powers are borrowed only, never bought.
How did the orcs lose shamanism?
Warcraft Wiki says that on Draenor Kil'jaeden distorted the shaman's connection with their spirits at the sacred mountain of Oshu'gun, taking the form of their ancestors to convince them the draenei were the enemy. The massacres offended the spirits, who denied the shaman their powers, and most then turned to the Legion's power as warlocks. The wiki says shamanism was all but extinct by the time the Horde crossed the Dark Portal. See orcs of Azeroth.
How did Thrall bring shamanism back?
Warcraft Wiki says orc shamanism stayed all but extinct until Thrall became Warchief of the New Horde and outlawed the Legion's dark magic. On Azeroth the tauren were shamanistic and the trolls worshiped the loa, the spirits. See Cairne Bloodhoof and the Darkspear trolls.
What is the Earthen Ring?
Warcraft Wiki calls it a neutral faction of shaman dedicated to preserving the balance between the elements, opposed by the Twilight's Hammer cult, and says the tauren founded it to lead their people with wisdom. Its Shaman page says 230 years before the Dark Portal opened and its Earthen Ring page says before the year minus 230, so the date is approximate. After the Third War, it says, the Ring began inducting Horde shaman, including orcs and Darkspear trolls. The druids' parallel order is the Cenarion Circle.
The wiki calls its original-game entry a lore stub.
Where is the Earthen Ring in WoW Forever?
Warcraft Wiki's Forever section says the Earthen Ring is based at Camp Gev'rek atop Skywatcher Plateau in northwestern Mulgore, and has allied with the Windshapers, a group of Skyborne, bringing them into the Horde. The wow-professions.com database agrees on the camp: its Forever page puts the quartermaster Sutara Plainstalker there, selling recipes for Earthen Ring reputation. Blizzard's Skyborne post says Horde-aligned Skyborne embrace elemental traditions and gain access to the Shaman class, and describes the Windshapers as seeking to restore the wind spirits. See the Mulgore and Skyborne guides.
What is not confirmed yet
- The Windshaper alliance rests on one source, Warcraft Wiki; I found it in no Blizzard page.
- Warcraft Wiki lists Wildhammer dwarves among the Ring's races; the Lore Forever Shaman page mentions the Wildhammer for dwarf shaman, but I found no Blizzard page tying Forever's Dwarf shaman to the Ring.
- Later events, such as the Cataclysm and Legion, are outside WoW Forever.
How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?
The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard, and has no internet access. Its library has a Shaman topic page. Willo is a separate companion app with a Windows 10 or 11 download and an Apple Silicon Mac download (macOS 12 or later); the Lore Forever FAQ calls her a companion app for Windows and Mac. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, you can ask her out loud about the Earthen Ring, and she can be wrong and is not official.
