WoW Forever Skyborne Guide: Classes, Unlock and Zephras Isle

The Skyborne are a new elf-descended playable race in WoW Forever with two faction paths: Horde-aligned Windshapers and Alliance-aligned High Order Skyborne. Both begin on Zephras Isle, a new level 1–12 region. Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid are open to both paths. The Horde path can also play Shaman, and the Alliance path can also play Mage.

One detail matters before you plan a Skyborne character: the race and its starting experience are not included with a base subscription alone. You need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition.

Skyborne quick facts

  • What they are: a new playable race in World of Warcraft: Forever.
  • Starting zone and levels: Zephras Isle, levels 1–12.
  • Horde tradition: Windshaper.
  • Alliance tradition: High Order.
  • Classes for both: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid.
  • Horde-only class: Shaman.
  • Alliance-only class: Mage.
  • Access: Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition.
  • Game launch: November 4, 2026.

The race adds new customization options, voices, animations and Druid forms. Racial abilities, listed below, can still be tuned before and after launch.

How to unlock the Skyborne in WoW Forever

You cannot unlock the Skyborne by leveling another race or finishing an achievement, based on Blizzard's announcement. Blizzard ties the race and the Zephras Isle starting experience to a paid upgrade.

To prepare, make sure you have a Battle.net account and an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time for the base game. Then, if you want Skyborne, buy the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher bundle from Blizzard. Once the entitlement is on your account, you can create the race when character creation allows it.

  • Skyborne Heroic Pack: the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle starting experience, Early Name Reservation, and extras including a ground mount and cosmetics.
  • Skyborne Epic Pack: everything in the Heroic Pack, plus beta access from September 17 and 30 days of Game Time starting November 4.
  • Warcraft Forever Collection: a limited-time bundle, available through January 11, 2027, that adds Warcraft III: Reforged and its Forsaken Kingdom campaign to the Epic Pack.

Check prices and availability in the Battle.net shop, because offers can vary by region. The free Lore Forever add-on does not unlock Skyborne or any other game content. It is an independent fan-made lore tool.

Windshaper or High Order: which Skyborne should you choose?

Both traditions share an ancient ancestry but disagree about their history and their future. You pick the tradition, and with it your faction, at character creation.

Horde: Windshaper Skyborne

Windshapers descend from the first shen'dorei high elves to receive the wind spirits' gift of elemental skysight, and their elemental link shows in Shaman access. Their classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid and Shaman. Choose this path if you want to adventure with Horde friends or specifically want a Skyborne Shaman.

Alliance: High Order Skyborne

High Order Skyborne descend from the ancient Highborne scholars of Eldre'Thalas, which shows in Mage access. Their classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid and Mage. Choose this path if your friends play Alliance or you want an arcane Skyborne Mage.

Practical decision: faction matters more than small racial differences when you coordinate with friends. Horde and Alliance characters cannot join the same ordinary dungeon group in Forever, and ruleset choices add a second separation.

Skyborne racial abilities

Blizzard's Skyborne announcement lists these racials. Treat the numbers as launch-version values that may be tuned.

  • Windshaper (Horde): Walk on Air (glide downward for 10 seconds), Skysight (an Elemental Blessing worth +10% run speed), Wind Blessed (+1% melee, ranged and spell Haste) and Elemental Insight (+5% damage to Elementals).
  • High Order (Alliance): Walk on Air, Read Ley Line (activate a ley line for 100% increased Health and Mana regeneration), Wind Blessed and Elemental Insight.

Skyborne classes compared

  • Warrior: both paths. Weapon combat and tanking.
  • Hunter: both paths. Solo questing and pet play.
  • Rogue: both paths. Stealth and deliberate combat.
  • Druid: both paths. Shapeshifting, healing and flexibility.
  • Shaman: Horde Windshaper only. Elements, totems and healing.
  • Mage: Alliance High Order only. Arcane, Fire and Frost spells.

Skyborne cannot be Paladins, Priests or Warlocks, so do not assume all nine classes are open to every race.

If this is your first WoW character, a Skyborne Hunter is a reasonable choice because the pet makes solo fights more forgiving. A Druid suits you if you want several roles, and Shaman and Mage deliver the most faction-specific character fantasies.

Where do the Skyborne start? Exploring Zephras Isle

Every Skyborne begins on Zephras Isle, a region for roughly levels 1 through 12 whose architecture draws on Skywall, the elemental plane of air. Blizzard frames it as a starting adventure about wind, ancestry, separation and a society under pressure.

According to Blizzard's race introduction, Skyborne history reaches back thousands of years to Highborne exiles who made a pact with elemental wind spirits and built a civilization in Skywall. Now the spirits that protected the homeland have vanished, ancient structures are failing, communities are isolated and the Skyborne are divided.

That makes the race more than a cosmetic option. The starting area sets up a conflict you play through, and your choice of Windshaper or High Order reflects a different response to the crisis.

What should you do during levels 1–12?

Follow the opening quest chain, learn your class's first abilities, pick up gear as you earn it and do not skip the dialogue that explains why the island is in trouble. Check your trainer when new abilities unlock.

The main learning goals are your class resource, your main attack, a defensive or escape tool, and how to judge whether an enemy is too dangerous. Druids should practice switching forms, Hunters should learn pet management as it unlocks, and Shamans and Mages should learn to manage mana between fights.

Leaving Zephras Isle: according to Forever's client data, two airships sail from Valanaar on the island. The Horde airship goes to Skywatcher Plateau in Mulgore, near Thunder Bluff, and the Alliance's Dalaran Skycutter goes to the outskirts of Dalaran in the Alterac Mountains. The island itself has no flight master.

Why the Skyborne matter to Forever's story

Forever is not replaying the whole timeline of modern WoW. It returns to the foundational conflicts and geography of original Azeroth and extends its own story. The Skyborne give a different view of the Highborne legacy, arcane ambition and relations with the elements. The Windshaper and High Order split works as storytelling because two characters from one people can hold very different views of power and duty, which makes the faction choice part of the narrative. When you finish Zephras Isle, you carry a history the rest of Azeroth may not know.

Make the starting story feel like an adventure

If you like the background of a zone but do not want to keep opening a wiki, try the free Lore Forever add-on. It includes a library of lore entries and narration where recorded, shown in an in-game interface. Voice and quest-dialogue coverage varies by area and optional pack, so check the downloads page for current coverage, including newly introduced areas.

On Windows, Willo is a separate desktop companion that works alongside the add-on, so you can ask questions about the world out loud. It is free to start, has optional paid plans, and does not unlock the Skyborne race or play the game for you.

Where to go next

If you are choosing between a Skyborne Hunter, Mage, Shaman or Druid, compare the nine beginner classes. For the Highborne, the wind spirits and the wider timeline, read the WoW Forever lore primer.
