Best Professions in WoW Forever for Every Playstyle
The safest professions in WoW Forever are one gathering profession paired with the crafting profession that uses it. Alchemy with Herbalism suits gold making, Blacksmithing with Mining suits melee players, and Enchanting with Tailoring suits casters. Cooking and Fishing cost nothing extra because every character can learn all three secondary professions.
Quick answer: You can have two primary professions plus Cooking, First Aid and Fishing. Maximum skill is 300. Learning a third primary means unlearning one and restarting from zero.

The profession list
Primary professions (two per character):
- Alchemy (crafting)
- Blacksmithing (crafting)
- Enchanting (gathering and crafting)
- Engineering (crafting)
- Herbalism (gathering)
- Leatherworking (crafting)
- Mining (gathering)
- Skinning (gathering)
- Tailoring (crafting)
Secondary professions (all three on every character): Cooking, First Aid and Fishing.
Forever has no Jewelcrafting or Inscription, and Blizzard says it adds more than 600 new recipes, most using vanilla materials.
Best pairs by playstyle
- Alchemy + Herbalism: gold making and self-sufficiency. You gather herbs and brew your own potions.
- Blacksmithing + Mining: plate wearers and melee characters.
- Engineering + Mining: PvP, utility and fun.
- Enchanting + Tailoring: cloth wearers and spellcasters.
- Leatherworking + Skinning: leather and mail wearers.
- Cooking + Fishing: a secondary pair that suits everyone.
Pair a crafting profession with its matching gathering profession unless a friend or an alt will gather for you. Otherwise you will pay other players for materials.
Which class goes with which
Blizzard has not published class-by-class profession advice, so this follows the gear you wear and the materials you need:
- Warriors, Paladins: Blacksmithing + Mining
- Hunters, Rogues, Druids, Shamans: Leatherworking + Skinning, or Herbalism + Alchemy for potions
- Mages, Priests, Warlocks: Tailoring + Enchanting
- Anyone: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing
Tauren get a bonus: Cultivation lets them pick herbs without Herbalism, and doubles yield if they have it. Gnomes' Engineering Specialization makes gadgets less likely to backfire.
When you can learn them
- Level 1: gathering professions at the Apprentice tier (skill up to 75).
- Level 5: crafting and secondary professions.
- Level 10: Journeyman (skill 50 to 150).
- Level 20: Expert (skill 125 to 225).
- Level 35: Artisan (skill 200 to 300), from special trainers.
A starting-zone quest offers three choices, each teaching a gathering profession and giving 2 skill points: Mining for Dummies (Mining), Pelt Collecting for Beginners (Skinning) and Wild Harvest (Herbalism). Orange recipes always raise skill, yellow usually do, green rarely and gray never.
Profession perks: camping and Legacy
Camping gives each profession camp objects with a shared buff, such as Alchemy's Blessing of Wisdom or Cooking's stamina food. Camp buffs do not stack with class buffs and are slightly weaker. Professions also have a Legacy perk tree with account-wide bonuses such as extra procs and faster skill-ups. See the camping guide and Legacy guide.
Making gold with professions
Alchemy with Herbalism is the pair Warcraft Tavern recommends for gold. Prices will change at launch, so do not trust any list of "best money-makers" until the live auction house settles. The gold guide covers the fundamentals.
Mistakes to avoid
- Taking two crafting professions with no gatherer
- Learning a third primary profession and losing your progress
- Buying materials for high skill before you can use them
- Expecting a profession to give a passive bonus (there are none; the value is in crafting, gathering and camp buffs)
