High Inquisitor Fairbanks Explained: Scarlet Monastery Lore
High Inquisitor Fairbanks is the undead boss behind a hidden door in the Scarlet Monastery Cathedral: in life a priest of the Knights of the Silver Hand and the closest advisor to Highlord Alexandros Mograine, then executed by the Scarlet Crusade and left in a secret chamber. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), which launched on November 4, 2026, Warcraft Tavern lists him as the first encounter of the Cathedral wing, a level 40 elite.
Quick answer: Fairbanks served Mograine, survived the ambush at Stratholme under a heap of corpses, told the truth about it, and was executed for blasphemy. His body was hidden in the Cathedral, where players fight him. He gives no quest.

Some bosses sit in the open and some wait behind a wall, and the ones behind the wall usually have a reason to be hidden.
Key facts
- Role in life: priest, Knights of the Silver Hand, closest adviser to Highlord Mograine (Warcraft Wiki)
- Fate: executed by the remaining crusaders, body discarded in a secret chamber of the Cathedral (Warcraft Wiki)
- In Forever: first Cathedral encounter, level 40 elite, in a hidden room on the right side; Cathedral levels 38 to 46 (Warcraft Tavern)
Who was High Inquisitor Fairbanks?
Warcraft Wiki describes a human priest and Knight of the Silver Hand who was Highlord Mograine's closest adviser. It says he followed Mograine to Ironforge to ask King Magni Bronzebeard to forge the blade. Read the Scarlet Crusade and Uther the Lightbringer for the order he came from.
Warcraft Wiki ties this backstory to the Ashbringer comic.
What happened to Fairbanks at Stratholme?
Spoiler warning for the backstory. Warcraft Wiki says Mograine's son Renault led his father and Fairbanks into a Scourge ambush at Stratholme. Fairbanks was the first to fall but did not die: he lay trapped beneath the corpses and heard Renault betray his father. He told the story at Hearthglen, and those who believed him left to found the Argent Dawn.
Why is Fairbanks undead and hidden?
Warcraft Wiki says the remaining crusaders executed him, citing blasphemy and possibly plague symptoms, and discarded his body in a secret chamber of the Cathedral. It says no explanation of his current state was given in the game or the comic. It also notes that the original game calls Fairbanks and Mograine founders of the Crusade, while the comic places its formation after their deaths. The Lore Forever library page tells the founder version: Fairbanks stood with Mograine, Abbendis and Isillien when they founded the Scarlet Crusade.
Where do you fight Fairbanks in WoW Forever?
Warcraft Tavern's Cathedral guide gives the wing as levels 38 to 46, with Fairbanks as the first boss encounter, followed by Scarlet Commander Mograine and High Inquisitor Whitemane. It says he tries to heal himself when low, that the heal can be interrupted, and that most of his other spells can be too. See the Scarlet Monastery guide.
For the original game, Warcraft Wiki says the room is reached by using a torch on the wall in the right prayer room behind the altar. I found no Forever page describing the opening.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether Forever's own text follows the comic or the founder version; the Lore Forever FAQ says Forever's text wins where it and the wiki disagree.
- How Fairbanks became undead, and how the hidden room opens in Forever.
- Whether the Corrupted Ashbringer event, which Warcraft Wiki calls non-canon, exists in Forever; no source I opened says so.
How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?
The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard, and has no internet access. Its library has a page for Fairbanks with narration from generated voices. Willo is a separate companion app with a Windows 10 or 11 download and an Apple Silicon Mac download (macOS 12 or later); the Lore Forever FAQ calls her a companion app for Windows and Mac. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, you can ask her out loud who Fairbanks was, and she can be wrong and is not official.
