Nethergarde Keep in WoW Forever: History, Location and Lore

Nethergarde Keep is the Alliance fortress at the northeastern edge of the Blasted Lands, built after the Second War at Archmage Khadgar's urging to watch the Dark Portal; in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, Dalaran's mages and Stormwind's supply caravans keep it running. As of November 5, 2026, no source I opened describes Forever-specific changes to the keep.

Quick answer: Warcraft Wiki puts Nethergarde Keep at about 65, 19 and calls it the only road into the Blasted Lands. The Alliance of Lordaeron paid for it, the Kirin Tor staffed it, and after Dalaran fell it leaned on Stormwind.

Six facts about Nethergarde Keep: built after the Second War at Khadgar's urging; paid for by the Alliance of Lordaeron; staffed mainly by the Kirin Tor; sits at about 65, 19 in the Blasted Lands; kept alive by Stormwind caravans after Dalaran fell; and the Blasted Lands are listed at levels 45 to 55.

The keep stands on the road into the Blasted Lands, with the Dark Portal beyond it.

What is Nethergarde Keep?

Warcraft Wiki says the keep was built to keep watch over the Dark Portal after the Second War and to ensure there would be no further invasions from Draenor. The Alliance of Lordaeron's kingdoms funded it, though some more willingly than others, and the Stonemasons Guild built it under Edwin VanCleef's supervision. The Kirin Tor mainly staffed it and were also tasked with stopping the spread of the taint from the orcish homelands. See the Dark Portal explained, Khadgar's story and Stormwind's history.

Who ran Nethergarde Keep in the first year of WoW?

Warcraft Wiki's section on the original game says the mages of Dalaran kept the keep running for the Kirin Tor and the Alliance after the Portal was sealed. They studied how the Portal's energy affected the Blasted Lands: mutated wildlife and tainted soil. After Archimonde destroyed Dalaran, the wiki says, the keep depended on support from the Kingdom of Stormwind and on Alliance warriors travelling into the Blasted Lands. The wiki adds that a caravan from Stormwind City supplied the keep, whose Wizard's Sanctum researchers needed nearly constant supplies.

Where is Nethergarde Keep, and what level is the zone?

Warcraft Wiki places it in the northeastern Blasted Lands at about 65, 19, and lists its facilities as an inn, mailbox, stables, anvil and forge, and a flight master, with no bank or auction house. That list is not labelled by era. The wiki's Blasted Lands (Classic) page gives levels 45 to 55 and calls Nethergarde's mages the only hospitable people in the region for the Alliance; the modern Blasted Lands page gives 15 to 30, a different version of the zone. For flight routes and zones see the travel guide and leveling from 30 to 60.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever status: Warcraft Wiki's Nethergarde Keep page does not mention Forever, and I could not open a Forever page for the keep.
  • Commander: the Blasted Lands (Classic) page names Archmage Thas'ranan as commander of the mages, while the Nethergarde page credits him only to the non-canon Warcraft RPG.
  • Later events: the reopened Dark Portal of The Burning Crusade and the keep's later destruction (the wiki credits the Ironmarch) are later in the timeline and outside Forever.
  • Fan-made coverage: I found no Nethergarde Keep page on Lore Forever's lore index on November 5; its FAQ says lore stays in the first year of WoW.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help at Nethergarde Keep?

The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard and has no internet access; it gives readable zone and place stories, and a Lore button on quests, with narration from generated voices. Willo is a separate companion app with a download for Windows 10 or 11 and one for Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later); her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ now say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. Ask her aloud, "why was Nethergarde built?" She is free to start with 50 answers a day, can be wrong and is not official.
