Murlocs in WoW Forever: Lore, Language and Where They Live

Murlocs are bipedal, amphibious humanoids who live along coastlines, lakeshores and riverbeds, speak a language called Nerglish, and fight in swarms; in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) you meet them on the shores of the original-era zones, from Westfall's lighthouse to the beaches of Darkshore. As of November 5, 2026, no source I opened lists murloc changes made for Forever.

Quick answer: Warcraft Wiki describes murlocs as about four feet tall, slime-skinned and fanged, with a language shared with the makrura. Their raids on the Darkspear trolls drew in Thrall, and that alliance became the heart of the modern Horde.

Six facts about murlocs: they live on coasts, lakes and rivers; they speak Nerglish; they swarm with a large social aggro radius; the naga enslave them; their attack on the Darkspear drew in Thrall; and you meet them at the Westfall Lighthouse, Darkshore and Wailing Caverns.
Murlocs from coast to Horde, as Warcraft Wiki and the Vanilla WoW Archive describe them.

Stand still near the water long enough in Azeroth and you will hear the gurgling start.

  • Behavior: pack fighters that swarm with overwhelming numbers and have a large social aggro radius (Vanilla WoW Archive)

What are murlocs in Warcraft lore?

Warcraft Wiki calls murlocs a bipedal, amphibious humanoid race with bulbous bodies, wide mouths, clawed hands and feet, and the ability to breathe underwater. It adds that scent glands release a pheromone that can drive nearby murlocs into a frenzy, and that murlocs may predate the trolls.

Brann Bronzebeard thinks they are clever; the wiki quotes him saying murlocs are "smart enough to not let anyone know." It records that murlocs have been moving inland to freshwater lakes and rivers.

What language do murlocs speak?

Murlocs speak Nerglish, called Murloc by the Vanilla WoW Archive, which says they usually speak no other language. Warcraft Wiki gives the murloc word for the race as "Mmmurlok" and says the language is shared with the makrura.

How did murlocs help build the Horde?

Warcraft Wiki says murloc attacks on the Darkspear trolls led Thrall and his warriors to drive off the fish-men worshipping the naga Zar'jira in the Third War. The wiki says the troll-orc alliance would form the heart of the modern-day Horde. The wiki also says the naga sometimes enslave murlocs. Read Thrall's story, the Darkspear trolls and the Third War explained. Later murloc stories, such as service to Queen Azshara in Battle for Azeroth, are outside Forever's first year.

Where do you meet murlocs in WoW Forever?

Warcraft Wiki lists murlocs in Westfall, where Old Murk-Eye led an attack on the lighthouse, and in the Wetlands, Dustwallow Marsh, the Swamp of Sorrows, Tirisfal Glades, the Blasted Lands and the Deadmines. On Kalimdor it says a few tribes prowl the beaches between Teldrassil and Darkshore. The Vanilla WoW Archive names Murkdeep, a level 19 murloc near huts in Darkshore, and Mutanus the Devourer, the level 22 elite end boss of Wailing Caverns. Warcraft Tavern's BlizzCon report says the new Riverglades zone has murlocs among its perils.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever changes: I found no source describing murloc changes in Forever; the Riverglades mention is a single line from Warcraft Tavern.
  • Exact locations: the wiki's zone list is not dated to the Classic era, so check the in-game zone.
  • Fan-made coverage: Lore Forever's lore index has a Murloc page, opened November 5; the FAQ says lore is kept to the first year of WoW.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with murlocs?

The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard and has no internet access; hover an NPC and press your key to open its entry, with narration from generated voices. Willo is a separate companion app with a download for Windows 10 or 11 and one for Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later); her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ now say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. Hold your talk key and ask "why do murlocs swarm?" She is free to start with 50 answers a day, can be wrong, and is not official.
