Scarlet Crusade Lore: Origins, Beliefs and the Monastery
The Scarlet Crusade is a fanatical human order that grew out of the Order of the Silver Hand after the Third War and is sworn to wipe out the undead of Lordaeron from its stronghold, the Scarlet Monastery in Tirisfal Glades. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft, it is the enemy of the Forsaken and the owner of Forever's four-wing Scarlet Monastery dungeon (levels 30 to 46).
Quick answer: After the Third War, survivors of the Silver Hand regrouped and a zealous faction took the name Scarlet Crusade. It came to distrust every non-human and every outsider as a possible carrier of the undead plague. Paladins who rejected that path left to found the Argent Dawn.

What is the Scarlet Crusade?
Warcraft Wiki says the Scarlet Crusade evolved from the Order of the Silver Hand after the Third War and was dedicated to "the eradication of the undead from Lordaeron." Wowpedia describes the same fanatical sect and adds that it has been accused of killing many innocents. It is not a Horde or Alliance government: it is a human religious order that treats almost everyone outside it as a threat.
How did the Scarlet Crusade begin?
According to Warcraft Wiki, the core of the Crusade began as Silver Hand survivors who regrouped in Hearthglen at Taelan Fordring's offer. After King Terenas and Uther the Lightbringer died, they decided to focus on stopping the spread of undeath in Stratholme and Andorhal. Wowpedia also has the survivors regrouping in Hearthglen, and says Renault Mograine, persuaded by the disguised demon Balnazzar, led his father Alexandros into Stratholme and stabbed him in the back. Both wikis name Saidan Dathrohan as Grand Crusader and tie him to Balnazzar: Warcraft Wiki says Dathrohan was killed and replaced by the dreadlord, and Wowpedia says he was secretly Balnazzar in disguise. Warcraft Wiki adds that Balnazzar, posing as Saidan, manipulated Renault Mograine until he betrayed his father. Spoiler note: this paragraph reveals a hidden identity.
What does the Scarlet Crusade believe?
The Scarlet Crusade believes the undead must be destroyed and that outsiders cannot be trusted. Warcraft Wiki says the group became intolerant of all non-human races and views outsiders as potential carriers of the undead plague who must be destroyed. Wowpedia says the same, including refugees. That belief puts the Crusade in constant conflict with the Forsaken, who are undead; the full background is in The Forsaken Explained.
Who leads the Scarlet Crusade?
Warcraft Wiki's history names Saidan Dathrohan, Scarlet Commander Renault Mograine and High Inquisitor Sally Whitemane among the early Crusade's leaders, although its infobox lists other names. Wowpedia lists Brigitte Abbendis as High General and co-founder, and Warcraft Wiki credits a faction of the Silver Hand led by General Abbendis with intolerance toward "lesser races." Mograine and Whitemane converted the Scarlet Monastery into a stronghold. Icy Veins' Cathedral guide shows the same pair as the final encounter: Scarlet Commander Mograine fights first, then High Inquisitor Whitemane arrives and revives him for a second phase. Warcraft Tavern says only that Mograine is always resurrected after his first defeat.
What is the Argent Dawn?
The Argent Dawn is the order that split from the Crusade. Warcraft Wiki says paladins who saw the Crusade's zealotry as a fall from its purpose left to form the Argent Dawn, which stayed faithful to the Light and accepted members of all races. Wowpedia adds that the Argent Dawn was openly hostile to the Scarlet Crusade.
What is the Scarlet Monastery?
The Scarlet Monastery is the Crusade's main stronghold, in the northeast corner of Tirisfal Glades. Warcraft Tavern's Forever guide says the building "was originally home to the priests of Lordaeron" and became a Crusade stronghold when the Scourge arose. It holds four dungeon wings, reached by portals inside the main building:
- Graveyard (30 to 38): Interrogator Vishas, Bloodmage Thalnos, plus rare enemies
- Library (33 to 41): Houndmaster Loksey and Arcanist Doan
- Armory (36 to 44): Herod
- Cathedral (38 to 46): High Inquisitor Fairbanks, then Mograine and Whitemane
The Armory and Library are behind locked doors that need the Scarlet Key, which Warcraft Tavern says drops from a chest behind Arcanist Doan. The same guide says the wings are largely unchanged from Classic apart from updated loot and rewards. For the full dungeon route, read WoW Forever Scarlet Monastery. The free Lore Forever add-on gives readable background in Tirisfal Glades as you stand in it, and the optional Willo Windows companion lets you ask lore questions by voice. Both are fan-made.
What is not confirmed yet
- Forever's story: Blizzard Watch reports that Forever deliberately diverges from original lore in places, so the Crusade's Forever quests may differ from older accounts. Quest text decides.
- Beta limits: the Forever beta was capped at level 30, according to kami-labs, so the Library, Armory and Cathedral level ranges come from Warcraft Tavern's guide and could not be fully tested in the beta.
- Dathrohan's fate: Warcraft Wiki says Dathrohan was killed and replaced by Balnazzar, and Wowpedia says he was Balnazzar in disguise, but Wowpedia's account of an executed Saidan is unclear. This guide uses only what both agree on.
- Later events: Wowpedia also covers the Crusade's later history, including a Northrend offshoot. That is outside Forever's setting and is left out.
- Wowhead: Wowhead's lore article on the Crusade could not be loaded when this guide was reviewed, so it is not cited.
