WoW Forever vs Classic vs Modern WoW: Which Mode to Play?

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is a third path beside modern World of Warcraft and WoW Classic: Blizzard calls it a "permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW", set after Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, with a journey to level 60. It launches on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST, and Blizzard's pages list all three under one World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.

Quick answer: Modern WoW is the current game, WoW Classic is Blizzard's group of Classic versions, and WoW Forever is a new version of the original-era world. No verdict here; this reports what Blizzard and named sources say as of November 3, 2026.

Three ways to play WoW as of November 3, 2026: modern WoW with Midnight live, WoW Classic with several versions, and WoW Forever launching November 4 with four rulesets and a level 60 journey, all under one subscription or Game Time.

Key facts

  • Forever rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay PvP at launch; Hardcore after launch (Blizzard)
  • Classic versions Blizzard lists: Classic Era, Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria Classic (Blizzard home page); its Classic game-modes FAQ also lists Classic Hardcore

What is modern WoW?

Blizzard sells it as World of Warcraft: every past expansion is included, and you can buy the latest, Midnight, whose 12.1.5 update is live. Warcraft Wiki says Forever does not share modern WoW's continuity. See WoW Forever for modern WoW players.

What is WoW Classic, and what does Blizzard call its versions?

Blizzard's Classic page invites you to relive the original WoW experience, and its subscription list names Classic Era, described as the original game with a reset content timeline, a clean-slate economy and new mega realms including Hardcore; Season of Discovery, which adds runes; Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, which adds Outland and flying mounts; and Mists of Pandaria Classic, which adds Pandaren and the Monk. See WoW Forever vs WoW Classic and for Classic veterans.

What is WoW Forever, and is it "Classic Plus"?

Blizzard's November 3 post lists more than 1,000 new quests across levels 1 to 60, new zones such as Mount Hyjal and Zephras Isle, nine new five-player dungeons, a new race, the Skyborne, and three raids on December 9.

Classic Plus is not Blizzard's label; none of the five Blizzard pages I opened uses it. Warcraft Wiki says the community calls Forever Classic+ and that it was known as Camelot in development. See Forever vs Classic Era and Classic Plus and differences from Classic.

What are Forever's rulesets, and is the "Classic" preset the same thing?

Forever starts you with a ruleset instead of a realm. Blizzard says each ruleset works as a broad player ecosystem, not a single traditional realm, and that you group and raid only with your own ruleset and faction. See rulesets.

Separately, the first login asks for an Experience Preset, Classic or Enhanced. Blizzard says Classic means a more traditional look, with standard-definition models and fewer modern interface features. That is a display setting, not the WoW Classic game.

How do cost and level cap compare?

Blizzard says one subscription gives access to World of Warcraft and WoW Classic, and that Forever is included with a subscription or Game Time. The starter guide says Skyborne access needs the Heroic Pack or higher. The Blizzard pages I opened show no prices; see which edition to buy. Blizzard describes Forever as a journey to level 60, and Warcraft Wiki says the cap stays there indefinitely. The Blizzard pages I opened state no cap for modern WoW, and mention level 60 for Classic only in the Hardcore text.

Who is each mode for, according to the sources?

Blizzard says Forever is for players new to WoW and for those returning, Classic is for reliving the original experience, and Midnight is the fight against the Void. Warcraft Wiki says Forever draws on Classic's design, with a more grounded story and community building over auto-matchmaking.

What is Lore Forever, then?

Lore Forever is our fan add-on, not a game mode, and not a version of WoW. Its FAQ says it is made for Forever only.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether characters move between Classic and Forever. Power Up Gaming (September 13) says they cannot, but admits Blizzard has not stated it and infers it from existing transfer policy; I found no Blizzard statement.
  • Prices, and when Hardcore arrives.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

If you pick Forever, the free Lore Forever add-on gives readable and recorded story for your zone and quest, up to level 30. Willo, an optional companion app, answers out loud and is free to start with 50 answers a day. Both are fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard, and Willo can be wrong.
