WoW Forever Launch Day for Lore Fans: What to Read and Hear

Before your first quest in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) on November 4, 2026, a lore fan needs three things from Blizzard: the game begins in the early "Year 1" of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal; the Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom campaign fills the four-year gap before it; and the Found Photos recap explains what the new zones are for. This page names no story endings.

Quick answer: Read Blizzard's Found Photos recap, skim the Forsaken Kingdom recap, and watch the "Unbowed" short story. Then let the free fan-made Lore Forever add-on tell the story of each NPC and quest as you reach it.

Lore road to launch: the Last Days of Lordaeron prologue, the Forsaken Kingdom campaign filling the four-year gap, WoW Forever in the early Year 1 inside its own time bubble, and launch on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Where the launch sits in the story, from Blizzard's recaps and Warcraft Wiki's dates.

Every first road in Azeroth begins in the middle of someone else's story, and Blizzard has left a few pages to read at the gate.

Key facts

  • Setting: early "Year 1" of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal (Blizzard, Found Photos recap, September 13)
  • Year: 25 years after the Dark Portal (Warcraft Wiki and our own FAQ; Blizzard's pages I opened say "Year 1")
  • Gap: Forsaken Kingdom fills the four years between Warcraft III and World of Warcraft (Blizzard)
  • Short story: "Unbowed", posted October 26 (Blizzard)

What era is WoW Forever set in?

Blizzard's recap says the game "occupies its own 'time bubble'", which lets the team add stories without disrupting original Azeroth's foundational stories while painting inside the lines of Warcraft lore. Blizzard's launch post sets it after Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. The recap never uses the word canon. See is WoW Forever canon, the timeline and the lore overview.

What should you read or watch first?

Blizzard's Found Photos recap explains the approach: local mysteries, grounded conflicts and underused characters. Its Forsaken Kingdom recap covers the campaign's Last Days of Lordaeron prologue, the rise of Sylvanas Windrunner and the Forsaken, and how the Undercity was founded, with new heroes Garek Bandarion and Dark Ranger Anya. Blizzard's "Unbowed" short story follows Cormack, a former Scarlet Crusader raised as Forsaken, asking whether a Forsaken can still serve the Light. Our summaries: Forsaken Kingdom and Unbowed and the three wars recap.

Which characters and places matter first?

For people, start with our main characters guide. For places, Blizzard's recap says starting areas such as the Valley of Trials and Shadowglen gain new NPCs, quests and profession hooks. Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades anchors the Forsaken paladin story (Bandarion Keep). Zephras Isle shows the Skyborne in crisis, and Mount Hyjal explores the aftermath of its battle. For the fallen kingdom, see Lordaeron explained.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The "25 years after the Dark Portal" figure appears on Warcraft Wiki and in our own FAQ, not in the Blizzard posts I opened, which say "Year 1".
  • How closely Forever's story will touch later Warcraft events; the team told TechRadar (October 11) its role in larger narratives "will be more subtle and grounded".
  • How the Forsaken paladin quests read in the launch build.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

This is where our own project fits, and it is fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. The free Lore Forever add-on puts the story inside the game: hover an NPC and press your key for that NPC's entry, read a one-line story in the tooltip, and press the Lore button on a quest dialog or the quest log for the quest's story. Entering a zone prints a clickable question in chat, and entering a dungeon links a primer whose "what the final fight means" part is spoiler-tagged. A Journey page lists completed quests by zone, and recorded narration covers every zone, capital and dungeon.

Per its FAQ, the lore keeps to the first year of WoW (25 years after the Dark Portal) and leaves out later expansions. Be aware how entries are made: our FAQ asks "How much is AI-written?" and answers that entries are "drafted with AI" from Warcraft Wiki and Forever's game text, then checked. Where the two disagree, Forever's text wins.

Willo answers lore questions out loud on Windows 10 or 11 and, per her page, Apple Silicon Macs (her FAQ still says Windows; Mac features unconfirmed). She is free to start with 50 answers a day, can be wrong and is not official. Characters answering in their own voices is on the Champion plan and up, per her plans page.
