Is WoW Forever Canon? What Blizzard Says About the Lore

In the Blizzard posts I opened, World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is never called canon or non-canon; the September 13, 2026 Found Photos panel recap says the game "occupies its own 'time bubble'", set in the early "Year 1" of the original game. Warcraft Wiki dates that first year to 25 years after the Dark Portal (25 ADP), after the Warcraft III campaign Forsaken Kingdom.

Quick answer: WoW Forever begins where original World of Warcraft begins, about four years after Warcraft III (our sum from Blizzard's "four-year gap" and Warcraft Wiki's dates). Blizzard says the time bubble lets the team add stories without disrupting original Azeroth's foundational stories. Whether modern WoW will mention them, the team has told TechRadar only that any link would be "more subtle".

WoW Forever timeline: the Third War in 20 to 21 after the Dark Portal, the Forsaken Kingdom campaign filling a four-year gap, WoW Forever in year 25 inside its own time bubble, and later events like Northrend outside it.
Where WoW Forever sits in the Warcraft timeline, per Blizzard and Warcraft Wiki, as of November 2, 2026.

Some stories are told in the margins of older ones. WoW Forever walks the roads you already know and opens the gates you never could.

Key facts

  • Blizzard's wording: its own "time bubble", inside the lines of Warcraft lore (Found Photos recap, September 13, 2026)
  • Start: early "Year 1" of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal (Blizzard)
  • Year: 25 ADP, first year of World of Warcraft (Warcraft Wiki)
  • Third War: 20 ADP to 21 ADP (Warcraft Wiki)
  • Launch: November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard)

Is WoW Forever canon?

The Found Photos recap never uses the word canon, and the TechRadar interview does not either. The recap says the game occupies its own "time bubble", which lets the team explore new possibilities without disrupting original Azeroth's foundational stories, while painting inside the lines of Warcraft lore. In a TechRadar interview published October 11, 2026, the team spoke of the game existing in its own continuity. Warcraft Wiki says Forever does not share a continuity with modern WoW and calls it an alternative branch.

Other outlets label it differently. One source, mein-mmo (September 15), quotes Josh Greenfield at BlizzCon as saying, in its translation, that Forever does not exist in modern WoW's continuity. Blizzard Watch (September 13) says the short answer to whether it fits current lore is that it does not, while calling that answer overly reductive. NoobToBoss (undated) says Blizzard has not called it a separate timeline, yet it behaves like a branch. The sources agree on the effect and differ on the label.

When does WoW Forever take place?

In the first year of World of Warcraft. Blizzard says Forever begins before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal and before later journeys such as Northrend. Warcraft Wiki sets it in 25 ADP, before The Burning Crusade. Blizzard's Forsaken Kingdom recap says that campaign fills the four-year gap between Warcraft III and World of Warcraft, and Warcraft Wiki dates the Third War to 20 to 21 ADP. Adding them gives about year 25; that arithmetic is ours, neither page states it. See the WoW Forever timeline.

What happened to Lordaeron before WoW Forever?

Lordaeron fell in the Third War. Warcraft Wiki records a plague of undeath, Prince Arthas killing King Terenas, and the Scourge destroying Capital City, after which Sylvanas Windrunner's free undead, the Forsaken, claimed the ruins and the Undercity beneath. Blizzard's Forsaken Kingdom recap covers Lordaeron's final hours and the founding of the Undercity. Forever continues from there: Blizzard says the Forsaken paladins' path rolls out of Forsaken Kingdom and centers on Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades. Read what happened to Lordaeron.

What does WoW Forever change from the main timeline?

It adds rather than rewrites. Blizzard's recap lists the Riverglades, built from a previously inaccessible part of the Classic world; new Wetlands and Desolace quests; Shen'dralas; Mount Hyjal after its battle; Forsaken paladins; and Zephras Isle with the Skyborne, which Blizzard calls surprising but self-contained. TechRadar quotes the team: "We have no plans to add races from WoW's expansions at this time." See lore changes and Skyborne lore.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether Forever events will ever appear in modern WoW. The team told TechRadar it may be part of larger narratives, with an interaction that is "more subtle and grounded", and is for now committed to Forever's own versions of places from later expansions.
  • The year number: Blizzard's pages I opened say "Year 1", not 25; the figure is from Warcraft Wiki alone.
  • Greenfield's exact wording; I read it only as reported by mein-mmo.
  • Anything after launch on November 4, 2026.

The free Lore Forever add-on treats Forever as its own continuity set 25 years after the Dark Portal and drops later-expansion lore, per its project README. It is fan-made. The Warcraft story recap covers the three wars.
