WoW Forever Lore Changes: What Is New Compared With the Original Game

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) keeps the original Azeroth of the game's first year but redraws parts of its map: it adds four new zones, the Skyborne race, the Undead Paladin, nine dungeons and a Legacy system. Noob to Boss reports that executive producer Holly Longdale said some known vanilla stories will not happen the same way.

Quick answer: The world and level 60 cap are the original's. The new parts are Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, Shen'dralas and Zephras Isle, one new race, six new race and class combinations, and Legacy. Only the Undead gain a Paladin among the Horde.

What WoW Forever changes and what it keeps
WoW Forever adds four zones, the Skyborne, six race and class combinations, nine dungeons and Legacy, keeps original Azeroth, the level 60 cap and no flying mounts, and leaves the Skyborne origin and later plot unconfirmed.

An old map is never finished: a hidden valley here, a locked ruin there. In Forever, some gaps are filled in.

Key facts

  • New zones: Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, Shen'dralas, Zephras Isle (Blizzard, Warcraft Wiki; Game Informer names three, not Shen'dralas)
  • New race: the Skyborne, lore exclusive to Forever (Warcraft Wiki, Noob to Boss)
  • New combinations: Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, Dwarf Shaman (Icy Veins, Warcraft Tavern)
  • New content: nine dungeons, two new raids and over 1,000 quests (Blizzard, Warcraft Wiki)
  • Kept: level cap 60, no flying mounts, no level scaling (Warcraft Wiki, Blizzard)

Which zones are new in WoW Forever?

Four corners of the old map now hold something new. Blizzard says Mount Hyjal is where players help restore the land after Archimonde's defeat. Riverglades is an Eastern Kingdoms frontier with over 150 quests, roughly for the mid-30s to mid-40s. Shen'dralas is a mystery tied to the Shen'dralar of Dire Maul and local centaur tribes. Zephras Isle, in Skywall, is a level 1 to 12 start.

Blizzard also adds a 15 against 15 battleground on the Darkspear Islands. For where each zone sits, see the timeline guide.

Who are the Skyborne, and are they original lore?

Above the clouds lives a people the old lore never named. The Skyborne are new. Warcraft Wiki says their lore is exclusive to Forever, and Noob to Boss says they have no earlier footprint. Horde Windshapers can be Shaman and Alliance High Order Skyborne can be Mage.

Their origin is told two ways. Warcraft Wiki says they descend from the people of Eldre'Thalas who fled Prince Tortheldrin, and Blizzard's race post likewise calls the High Order descendants of the Highborne scholars of Eldre'Thalas. Blizzard Watch says high elves struck a deal with the elemental lords of Air after the Shen'dralar turned to demonic magic. Read the Skyborne guide.

Do the race and class combinations change?

Some old roads now admit new travelers. Yes, six combinations are new for existing races: Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest and Dwarf Shaman, per Icy Veins and Warcraft Tavern. The Undead Paladin is the only Horde Paladin; orcs, tauren and trolls cannot be Paladins. Blizzard says Forsaken Kingdom tells of "the first Forsaken Paladin," which Blizzard Watch calls a divergence from the original. Races from The Burning Crusade onward are not playable, per Warcraft Wiki. See the race and class guide.

Which dungeons and raids are new?

Beneath old cities, new doors have opened. Blizzard lists nine, among them Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, City of Dalaran, Blackmaw Hold, the Drowned City, Alcaz Prison and Shaper's Terrace. Blizzard's story hooks include Forsaken reclaiming Lordaeron, Titan mysteries in Un'Goro and naga near the Drowned City. Two raids, Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Barrow Deeps (10 players), unlock December 9. See the dungeons guide.

What is the Legacy system?

Not every change is a place. Blizzard calls Legacy an account-wide horizontal progression system. Its 65 challenges each earn one point, and each character can spend 16 points at launch. See the Legacy guide.

What stays the same, and does Forever diverge from the original story?

Much of the map still reads as it did in 2004. Warcraft Wiki says the level cap is 60, indefinitely. Blizzard says there are no flying mounts and no level scaling, and describes a "reimagined original Azeroth." Warcraft Wiki says Forever introduces storylines "entirely distinct from the original historical timeline." Blizzard Watch says Forever "won't completely break or re-write the lore." Compare the Classic differences.

The free Lore Forever add-on gives readable zone background, and the optional Willo voice companion answers questions. Both are fan-made.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Skyborne origin: sources disagree.
  • Later plot: Blizzard has published no plot beyond zone and dungeon summaries.
  • Longdale's remark: Noob to Boss paraphrases it.
