WoW Forever vs Classic WoW: 10 Differences, With Sources
Developers and Blizzard have described at least ten rules that set World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) apart from the Classic WoW rulebook veterans know: no GDKP loot bidding, no heroic dungeons or raids, no flex raiding, no cross-faction raids, no surprise Ahn'Qiraj, a choice of Classic or Enhanced presentation, required last names, rulesets instead of realms, no summoning from Meeting Stones, and no rated PvP. Most come from the developers' September 2026 Q&A as reported by Warcraft Tavern, and none of the sources I opened sets each rule against a specific Classic version.
Quick answer: Expect a first-year Azeroth with a level 60 cap, but a rulebook of its own for loot, raids, groups and servers. Each change below names its source, because several rest on one report.

A veteran of the old roads will find the milestones where memory left them. The map is the same first-year Azeroth; the rules written on the signposts are not.
Key facts
- Loot: GDKP is not allowed (Warcraft Tavern, September 17)
- Difficulty: no heroic versions of dungeons and raids (Warcraft Tavern)
- Raids: no flex raiding, no cross-faction raiding; 10-, 20- and some 40-player raids (Warcraft Tavern, Kotaku)
- Servers and names: rulesets replace the realm list; a last name is required (Blizzard, Warcraft Tavern)
- PvP: no rated PvP planned; a seasonal Honor track instead (Warcraft Tavern)
What is different about loot and raids in WoW Forever?
Four rules change the raid night. Warcraft Tavern's September 17 report on the developer Q&A says WoW Forever will not allow GDKP, gold-bid loot, to preserve the social experience and keep GDKP from replacing guild structure. The same report says the developers told players there won't be heroic versions of dungeons and raids and that Forever won't have flex raiding, with 10- and 20-player versions of each raid tier and some 40-player raids. Kotaku, on September 14, also reports that flex raiding is out, with at least one 10-player and one 20-player raid per tier and a 40-player raid in some tiers. Warcraft Tavern adds that there will be no cross-faction raiding. On Ahn'Qiraj, the report says only that developers said it will not drop as a surprise at release; Blizzard's raid overview lists Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia's Lair for December 9. See the raids guide.
What is different about how the game looks and names you?
Two things greet you at the start. Warcraft Tavern reports that on first login you choose a "classic" or "enhanced" style, and that classic by default disables transmogrification and quest tracking and uses the original SD models; you can change those later. Warcraft Wiki lists updated world visuals and an SD and HD character model toggle among its features, and Kotaku's October 27 reservation article says graphics settings can switch between new and old character models. Names change too: Warcraft Tavern says a last name is mandatory, and Blizzard's naming article says each character has two names that together form a full name unique within a region, with the second name hideable in the game world.
What is different about servers and groups?
There is no realm list to pick from. Blizzard says players select a ruleset "instead of choosing from a long list of realms," calls the result a realmless structure, and lists Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP at launch, with Hardcore after launch. Grouping works only inside a ruleset, and playing a different ruleset means creating a new character, Blizzard says. Warcraft Tavern's Q&A report words the switch as needing a Character Transfer service, a conflict covered in can you switch rulesets. On groups, Warcraft Tavern and Kotaku, writing on September 14, say Meeting Stones cannot summon players; Kotaku says summoning requires a Warlock in the party. Warcraft Tavern reports that the Looking For Group window organizes groups without forming them automatically, and Kotaku describes a new Looking for Group feature at Meeting Stones for listing and finding groups. Details: no summoning stones.
What is different in PvP?
Warcraft Tavern says no rated PvP is planned. A seasonal Honor track with its own rewards resets each season, and developers want more ways to earn Honor than farming Alterac Valley. Kotaku and Warcraft Wiki add a new battleground, the Darkspear Islands. See world PvP and honor.
What has not changed from Classic?
The setting and the ceiling. Warcraft Wiki puts WoW Forever in the first year of the game ("25 ADP") with a level 60 cap, and Kotaku also reports a cap of 60. For the long comparison, read WoW Forever vs WoW Classic and the Classic veterans guide. The free Lore Forever add-on tells zone and quest stories in Forever's own continuity, set 25 years after the Dark Portal, with later-expansion lore dropped.
What is not confirmed yet
- Warcraft Tavern's Q&A report is second-hand; I did not open a Blizzard transcript.
- The Classic or Enhanced defaults rest on that one report.
- Which of these rules differ from Classic Era, Classic Plus or later Classic versions: the sources describe Forever's own rules and compare them mostly to the original game.
