WoW Forever World PvP and Honor: Flagging, Rulesets and How You Earn Rank

World PvP in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) depends on your ruleset: on Normal and Roleplaying you flag yourself to fight, while on the PvP ruleset you are flagged automatically in contested and enemy territory, according to Method and ExitLag. Blizzard says Honor comes from defeating players, finishing battlegrounds and PvP quests, but that Rank Points come only from battlegrounds and PvP quests.

Quick answer: Choose your ruleset before you create a character, because you cannot switch later. Killing players earns Honor, not Rank Points. Blizzard has not published Forever's honorable-kill rules for the open world. Figures are as of October 25, 2026.

World PvP flagging by WoW Forever ruleset: Normal and Roleplaying flag manually with the /pvp command, PvP and RP-PvP flag automatically in contested or enemy territory, PvP-ruleset characters are limited to one faction, and Hardcore stays separate.
How each WoW Forever ruleset handles world PvP flagging and factions. RP-PvP details are reported by outside sources, not Blizzard.

Every road in Azeroth runs through someone's territory. On some roads the war is a choice you make with a flag. On others the war has already made it for you, and a stranger on the hill is a stranger with a grudge.

Key facts

  • Normal ruleset: PvP is optional (Blizzard); you opt in with /pvp, and the flag lapses after five minutes without PvP combat (Method)
  • PvP ruleset: every trip into contested territory carries more danger; Method says you are flagged everywhere except sanctuaries and your own faction's areas (Blizzard; Method)
  • Factions: the PvP ruleset limits you to one faction; Blizzard does not say whether that is per account or per region (Blizzard; Icy Veins; ExitLag)
  • Honor: earned by defeating players, finishing battlegrounds and PvP quests (Blizzard)
  • Rank Points: earned from battlegrounds and PvP quests, with a weekly cap (Blizzard)
  • Rated PvP: developers said there are no current plans; arenas are not announced (Warcraft Tavern)

How does world PvP flagging work in WoW Forever?

Blizzard's rulesets post says Normal is the baseline, where players engage in combat against other players when they choose to, and that on the PvP ruleset every trip into contested territory carries danger, excitement and open-world conflict. It does not publish the flagging rules.

Outside guides fill the gap and disagree slightly. Method (October 24) says Normal players flag with /pvp and are also flagged in enemy territory or when attacking flagged targets, and that PvP-ruleset players are flagged automatically in all areas that are not sanctuaries or owned by their faction. ExitLag (September 30) says characters of level 15 and up flag automatically in contested or enemy territory on PvP rulesets. Treat the exact contested-zone list as unconfirmed. The rulesets guide explains each ruleset.

Which ruleset is best for world PvP?

The PvP ruleset is the one built for it. Method warns you can expect to get jumped, ganked and corpse-camped while questing on it, and that you can do the same to others. Blizzard adds that the PvP ruleset limits you to one faction, and that it will use balancing systems, as in Season of Discovery, to keep Horde and Alliance populations closer together.

Normal and Roleplaying keep PvP optional. The RP-PvP ruleset guide covers the fourth option, and the Alliance vs Horde guide covers the faction choice. Blizzard says Hardcore stays separate from the other rulesets' battlegrounds, and Method says Hardcore has no battlegrounds.

Where does Honor come from in WoW Forever?

Blizzard's PvP progression post says Honor is a currency earned by taking part in PvP content: defeating other players, completing battlegrounds and finishing relevant PvP quests. Warcraft Tavern and Gfinity repeat that. Honor buys two PvP gear sets, one blue and one epic, and Blizzard says holiday-week battlegrounds give more.

Rank Points work differently. Blizzard says they come from battlegrounds and relevant PvP quests, and its post does not list open-world kills as a source. Ranks run to 14 with a weekly cap. The battlegrounds guide lists the maps, the rank rewards and the seasonal journey.

What were the honorable kill rules in the original game?

Warcraft Tavern's Classic PvP overview and Warcraft Wiki's original honor system page agree on three rules for the original game. Killing an opposing-faction player earns an honorable kill only if the victim is not grey to you. Repeated kills of the same player within 24 hours award less honor. Killing a passive civilian counts as a dishonorable kill.

Blizzard has not said which of these rules Forever uses, and none of the Forever sources I opened publishes them.

Are there arenas in WoW Forever?

Arenas have not been announced. Warcraft Tavern's September 17 report on a developer Q&A says "there are no current plans for rated PvP", and that the team plans a seasonal Honor track instead. Warcraft Wiki's Forever page lists PvP season refreshes for spring and summer 2027. The Forever Open guide covers the beta's 1v1 dueling tournament. The free Lore Forever add-on shows zone background while you travel contested ground.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Flagging details: Blizzard has not published contested zones or the exact flag rules; Method and ExitLag differ.
  • Open-world Honor: the amount of Honor per kill, diminishing returns and any dishonorable-kill penalty are unpublished.
  • RP-PvP: Blizzard has not published its own rules; Method says it follows PvP rules plus roleplay expectations.
  • Beta: the beta capped at level 30, and the zones where flagging matters most were not tested.
