WoW Forever RP-PvP Ruleset: Rules, Names, Flagging and Who It Suits

The Roleplay-PvP (RP-PvP) ruleset is the fourth ruleset World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) will offer at launch on November 4, 2026, added by Blizzard on October 22 after it voiced concerns about the idea on a podcast a week earlier. Blizzard has not yet published its rules, so this guide separates Blizzard's wording from outlet reports.

Quick answer: RP-PvP is for players who want to stay in character and still face the opposing faction. Whether it joins Roleplaying's naming and behavior rules to PvP's open-world danger is reported, not confirmed. Rulesets cannot be switched later, so choose before you create a character.

RP-PvP beside the other rulesets
Normal and Roleplaying let you flag yourself and allow both factions, PvP flags you automatically in contested and enemy zones and allows one faction, Roleplaying has strict naming rules, and RP-PvP has no published flagging or faction rules.

Pull up a stool, traveler. A tavern has house rules, the road has its own, and a ruleset is simply the two written down together.

Key facts

  • Rules: no published RP-PvP flagging or faction rules (Blizzard, Bind on Forever)

  • PvP ruleset: characters for one faction only, with more danger in contested territory (Blizzard)

  • Name reservation: October 27 to November 3 for eligible upgrade purchases, with RP-PvP planned but not promised (Blizzard, Bind on Forever)
  • Grouping: same ruleset and same faction only (Blizzard)

What is the RP-PvP ruleset in WoW Forever?

Forever has no realms, so a ruleset is the house law of a whole community. Blizzard calls each ruleset a broad player ecosystem rather than a single realm. Normal, PvP and Roleplaying were announced first, with Hardcore to follow after launch.

On October 22 Blizzard's Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield posted: "We will add a Roleplay-PVP Ruleset for launch on November 4." The post says the team had raised concerns on the WoW Forever podcast, kept discussing it, then examined what adding it would take and decided to proceed (Warcraft Tavern, Bind on Forever). MeinMMO reported on October 16 that Blizzard feared splitting the small roleplaying community, and that past Classic RP-PvP realms became ordinary PvP realms when many players ignored the roleplaying rules.

How does RP-PvP differ from the other rulesets?

Four doors lead into one tavern, and each asks for a different oath. Blizzard describes Normal as the baseline with optional PvP, and PvP as the ruleset where every trip into contested territory carries more danger, with characters for one faction only. Roleplaying is for players who want to lean into the fantasy and find like-minded adventurers, and allows both factions.

Blizzard has not described RP-PvP itself. Method (October 24) says it mainly follows PvP rules, with roleplay expected, and Endgame Tools calls it Roleplaying's rules plus PvP's danger. Those are readings, not Blizzard statements, and whether the one-faction limit applies is unpublished (Bind on Forever). Blizzard says you group, run dungeons and raid only inside your ruleset, and Horde and Alliance never group. See the rulesets overview and Alliance vs Horde.

What are the naming and roleplay expectations?

In a roleplaying hall, your name is the first thing you say about yourself. Blizzard's naming article says names have two parts, the full name must be unique in your region, and names must follow the in-game code of conduct. It gives family-style second names, such as Asha Brightvale and Thalen Brightvale, as an example.

The Roleplaying ruleset's in-game description promises "strict naming conventions and behavior rules." Blizzard's naming article sets no roleplaying-specific rules, but Method says roleplaying names must be believable for the setting, puns are out, and names cannot currently be changed. Blizzard's older Roleplaying realm policy, archived on Warcraft Wiki, asked for fantasy-fitting names and no out-of-character talk in Say, Yell or Party, but that is history, not a Forever rule.

How does PvP flagging work, and what are the consequences?

The road's law is simple: you are a target when you raise a flag, or when you walk where flags are raised for you. Icy Veins' PvP overview says Normal and Roleplaying players flag themselves, with /pvp or from the portrait, to join world PvP. On the PvP ruleset you are flagged automatically on traveling to a contested or enemy zone, and in general any zone above level 15 is contested. We found no Blizzard contested-zone list and no RP-PvP flagging rule.

Blizzard says Honor comes from defeating players, completing battlegrounds and PvP quests (Blizzard, October 7). Rank Points come from battlegrounds and PvP quests, with a weekly cap. Whether killing civilians brings dishonorable kills is unannounced (wow4ever). The beginner's guide covers the basics.

Who is RP-PvP for, and how do you choose?

Choose the oath you can keep for sixty levels. Method says most new players should choose Normal. In our reading, RP-PvP fits players who want story and danger on the same road, Roleplaying suits in-character play without attacks unless you flag, and PvP suits fighters. Warcraft Tavern notes that RP-PvP communities tend to be small and niche.

Agree the ruleset and faction with your friends, because you cannot switch later. Early Name Reservation lets eligible upgrade owners reserve up to three characters across all rulesets (Method, Bind on Forever), and Bind on Forever advises reserving elsewhere only if you are sure, should RP-PvP not be selectable on day one. The free Lore Forever add-on shows zone and quest background, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Neither changes your ruleset. The release date guide lists launch steps.

What is not confirmed yet

  • RP-PvP's own rules, flagging and faction limit are unpublished.
  • Blizzard says it plans RP-PvP for Early Name Reservation on October 27, not that it is certain.
  • Earlier sources list only three launch rulesets, and MeinMMO's October 16 report said no RP-PvP for now. Blizzard's October 22 update supersedes both.
  • Roleplaying behavior rules and a Blizzard contested-zone list were not found, and the beta capped at level 30.
