Can You Switch WoW Forever Rulesets? Not Freely, One Exception

Not freely: in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), Blizzard says players cannot freely hop between rulesets and must create a new character to play in another, and the one confirmed exception is a dead Hardcore character, which can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. Hardcore itself arrives only after launch on November 4, 2026.

Quick answer: Treat your first choice as lasting. Method, mein-mmo and Warcraft Tavern's character creation guide report no other transfers, while a September Developer Q&A recap and kami-labs leave open a paid Character Transfer service. No source I opened shows one on sale or announced. Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets.

What Blizzard says about moving between WoW Forever rulesets: movement is intentionally limited, a new character is needed, only a dead Hardcore character can transfer, and collections and Legacy Points are account-wide.
Moving between rulesets in WoW Forever, from Blizzard and the sources named in the text, as of October 29, 2026.

A traveler who crosses a border cannot always carry the road home with him. A ruleset is a border of that kind, drawn before you take your first step.

Key facts

  • Switching: movement between rulesets is intentionally limited; a new character is needed (Blizzard, updated October 22)
  • Exception: a dead Hardcore character can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP (Blizzard; Method)
  • Hardcore timing: after launch, no date (Blizzard)
  • Account-wide: collections and Legacy Points, with Hardcore handled differently (Blizzard)
  • Names: the first-plus-last-name pair is unique per region across all rulesets (Warcraft Tavern; Method)
  • Open question: whether a paid transfer service will exist (kami-labs; Warcraft Tavern's Developer Q&A recap)

What does Blizzard say about switching rulesets?

Blizzard's ruleset article says each ruleset supports a distinct community and playstyle, so movement between them is intentionally limited. Players cannot freely hop between rulesets and need to create a new character in the one they want. Blizzard also says you can group, run dungeons and raid only inside your own ruleset, and that battlegrounds may include other rulesets except Hardcore. See the rulesets guide and which ruleset to pick.

Is there a Character Transfer service for rulesets?

This is where the sources part ways. Warcraft Tavern's recap of the Developer Q&A, published September 17, says in the writer's own words that you won't be able to change style "without a Character Transfer service." It does not say such a service is planned or priced.

Newer pages are firmer. Blizzard's October 22 article mentions only the Hardcore transfer. Method (October 24) says that apart from dead Hardcore characters, no transfers between rulesets are possible. mein-mmo (October 23) says switching is not possible and needs a new character. Warcraft Tavern's character creation guide says characters cannot be transferred between rulesets. kami-labs (October 23) says no source it consulted tells whether a paid transfer will ever exist outside Hardcore.

No source I opened shows a ruleset transfer service on sale or announced, and none rules one out for later. That is unresolved.

What carries over to a new character on another ruleset?

The account keeps the souvenirs, and the character stays behind. Blizzard says collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently. Names do not carry: Method says a name used on one ruleset is unavailable to anyone, including you, on another in the same region, and Warcraft Tavern's recap says the first-plus-last-name pair is unique per region across all gameplay styles. A second character needs a different pair. No source I opened says whether deleting a character frees its name. Read the character name rules and the Legacy system guide.

How does the Hardcore exception work?

Blizzard says that if a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. Hardcore otherwise stays a closed ecosystem: Blizzard says progress and rewards earned there can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back in. Gfinity (October 26) adds that Hardcore deaths are permanent. Hardcore is not available at launch. See the Hardcore ruleset guide.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether a paid ruleset transfer will exist at launch or later.
  • Whether deleting a character frees its name for reuse.
  • How Roleplay-PvP treats factions, which Blizzard's article does not describe.

If you do start over, the free Lore Forever add-on has a Journey page listing the quests a character has completed, newest first, so each new character gets its own record.

Frequently asked questions

Can you switch rulesets in WoW Forever?

Not freely. Blizzard says you need to create a new character to play in another ruleset, and that movement between rulesets is intentionally limited.

Can you transfer a character between rulesets in WoW Forever?

Only a dead Hardcore character is confirmed to transfer, per Blizzard and Method. mein-mmo and Warcraft Tavern's character creation guide report no other transfers, while a September Developer Q&A recap and kami-labs leave a paid service open.

Do you keep your collections on a new ruleset?

Yes. Blizzard says collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently.

Can you reuse a character name on another ruleset?

No. Warcraft Tavern and Method say the name pair is unique per region across all rulesets.

Can you change from Normal to PvP later?

Not by switching. Method says Normal lets you opt into PvP with /pvp, but moving a character to the PvP ruleset would need a transfer that no source I opened shows. Ask your group first.
