Which Ruleset to Pick in WoW Forever: Normal, PvP or RP?

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) launches on November 4, 2026 with four rulesets, Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, and Blizzard does not say which to pick. Method advises most new players to start with Normal, "the most forgiving environment" to learn the game.

Quick answer: Choose the ruleset your friends will play. Blizzard says you can group, run dungeons and raid only inside one ruleset, and that moving between rulesets is intentionally limited. Normal keeps PvP optional, PvP makes contested land dangerous, and Roleplaying adds naming rules.

The WoW Forever rulesets at launch: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore after launch, and what each means for PvP, factions and grouping.

Azeroth no longer hands you a realm list to scroll. It hands you four doors, and each opens onto a different road.

Key facts

  • Rulesets at launch: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, the last added October 22 (Blizzard)
  • Hardcore: arrives after launch, with no date (Blizzard)
  • Grouping: same ruleset only; Horde and Alliance cannot group (Blizzard)
  • PvP on Normal: opt in with /pvp; the flag drops after 5 minutes without PvP combat (Method)
  • Name reservation: October 27 to November 3 for upgrade owners, up to three names; launch November 4, 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard)

What are the four rulesets in WoW Forever?

Blizzard describes Normal as the baseline experience of exploration, questing and cooperation, with PvP when players choose it. PvP makes every trip into contested territory more dangerous. Roleplaying leans into the fantasy of Azeroth. Roleplay-PvP was added on October 22, and Blizzard's article gives it no description. Our rulesets guide goes further.

Method adds detail: on Normal most players cannot attack you and you flag yourself with /pvp, while on PvP you are flagged everywhere outside sanctuaries and your faction's territory. Roleplaying mainly follows Normal rules with believable names. RP-PvP mainly follows PvP rules plus roleplay, and Method voices concern that it may become a second faction server for players who want both sides.

Which ruleset do guides recommend?

Each guide lights a different lamp, and none names a winner for all.

  • Method (October 24) advises most new players to start with Normal.
  • Gfinity (October 26) gives no explicit pick. It calls Normal suited to casual players and low-stress dungeons and raids, PvP aimed at competitive players, and Roleplay for lore immersion.
  • kami-labs (October 23) names no best choice, notes Normal already offers PvP via /pvp, and advises "decide with your group before reserving."
  • iTechGuides (October 13) advises agreeing on faction and ruleset with friends before leveling.

How does the PvP ruleset change your faction choice?

On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard says players can create characters for only one faction, so an Alliance character there blocks a Horde character there. Gfinity says the limit is per account, and Method adds "in the same region." Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both factions. Blizzard may also temporarily limit new character creation for one faction to balance populations. Blizzard's text does not say whether Roleplay-PvP has the same limit, though Method's concern assumes it does. Read Alliance vs Horde before choosing.

Can you change your mind after picking a ruleset?

Not freely. Blizzard says each ruleset supports a distinct community and playstyle, so movement between them is intentionally limited, and you need a new character to play in another. Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently. The exception is Hardcore, where a dead character can transfer to another ruleset. Sources differ on whether paid transfers could come later; see can you switch rulesets.

When do you have to choose?

Warcraft Tavern's character creation guide says the first choice at login is which ruleset to play. Blizzard lists Early Name Reservation for upgrade purchasers from October 27 to November 3, with up to three names first-come, first-served, and says Roleplay-PvP is planned for it. Names are unique per region across rulesets (Warcraft Tavern; Method); see the character name rules and name reservation guide.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard's article gives no Roleplay-PvP rules; Method's description is its own account.
  • No source I opened gives a Hardcore date; Blizzard says only that it arrives after launch. See the Hardcore guide.
  • No source I opened says how many characters each ruleset allows.

If your group is still deciding, Willo, a Windows companion app, has a Friends tab showing who is out in the world and where they were last seen, when they share it. The free Lore Forever add-on works on Mac too.
