WoW Forever for Classic Veterans: What Changed From the Vanilla Game

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) keeps the first-year Azeroth and the level 60 cap of Classic, then changes the world, the rules around you and many of the numbers. As of October 28, 2026, Warcraft Wiki lists new zones, dungeons, raids, a new race, six new race and class combinations, and more than 1,000 new quests.

Quick answer: If you played Classic, expect familiar roads and a level 60 ceiling, but do not trust old memory for gear lists, weapon skills, racials or class roles. Rulesets replace realms, Legacy Points replace achievements, and no source opened shows a way to bring a Classic character over.

What changes for Classic veterans in WoW Forever
Six-part map of what changes for Classic veterans in WoW Forever as of October 28, 2026: the same first-year setting and level 60 cap, new zones such as Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, Shen'dralas and Zephras Isle, the new Skyborne race and six new race and class combinations, rulesets on one mega-realm each, old best-in-slot lists no longer apply with hit and crit automatic, and new weapon rules such as Rogues using one-handed axes. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Warcraft Tavern, Mein-MMO.

A veteran walks into Elwynn Forest or the Valley of Trials and knows the road by heart. The trouble is that the road has been quietly repaved, and the maps in your head are older than the stones.

Is WoW Forever the same game as Classic?

Close in spirit, separate in fact. Warcraft Wiki describes WoW Forever as keeping the core mechanics and look of the 2004 release, set in the first year of the game, and running as a standalone branch beside Classic. Power Up Gaming, in a September 13, 2026 article, says it is not an expansion and is developed separately. The same page lists new talents among the planned updates. Read the full comparison in the WoW Forever vs Classic guide.

What is new in the world for Classic players?

Warcraft Wiki lists four new zones, Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, Shen'dralas and Zephras Isle, and says original zones are expanded and Dalaran is placed in the Alterac Mountains. New dungeons include Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, Excavation Site: Wetlands, City of Dalaran, The Drowned City, Krol'dok Stronghold, Alcaz Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace. New raids are Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, while Onyxia's Lair is marked as existing content. See the dungeon guide and the lore changes guide.

What changed for races, classes and weapons?

Warcraft Wiki says Skyborne is a new playable race, that six new race and class combinations are added for existing races, and that all nine classes have new or updated abilities and talents. Warcraft Tavern's weapon trainer guide says Rogues can now use one-handed axes, Druids can learn polearms and Druids start with Feral Combat as a weapon skill at level 1; polearms require level 20. The race and class combinations guide lists what is playable.

Do old gear lists and class roles still apply?

Not reliably. Mein-MMO's guide, published October 21, 2026, says old best-in-slot lists no longer apply because items, stats, talents and racial skills were adjusted. It also says hit rating and critical strike now apply automatically to spells and melee attacks, many old weapon skill sources are gone, Paladins can reliably tank or deal damage and Survival Hunters are back near the front. Quest rewards were significantly enhanced, so the same article advises not skipping quests whose Classic rewards were weak. BoostRoom's September 14 guide adds that Classic experience "helps, but it does not answer everything."

What systems are different around the game?

Warcraft Wiki says players are split by ruleset, Normal, PvP, Roleplay, Roleplay-PvP and Hardcore, on one mega-realm per ruleset per region, with Hardcore planned for later. Legacy Points replace achievement points, Collections are account-wide and a camping system is added. It also lists Season of Discovery carryovers: the Cozy Sleeping Bag, Chronoboon Displacer, library books for all classes and Comprehend Scroll. See the rulesets guide, the Legacy guide and the camping guide. The free Lore Forever add-on is a fan-made zone and quest companion.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether Classic characters, gold or guilds can move to WoW Forever: Power Up Gaming says Blizzard has not said so and infers a new character is needed.
  • Racial ability details: sources say racials were adjusted but opened pages list few specifics.
  • Talent changes for levels 31 to 60: the beta ended with a level 30 cap and no level 31 to 60 content was playable, per Warcraft Tavern's beta page.
  • Whether Warcraft Wiki's list reflects launch content, as it is a community page and carries no date.

Frequently asked questions

Is WoW Forever just Classic with new zones?

No. Warcraft Wiki says it keeps Classic's core mechanics and setting but adds new zones, dungeons, raids, the Skyborne race and more than 1,000 new quests, and rebalances classes and talents.

Can I use my Classic character in WoW Forever?

No source opened shows a transfer. Power Up Gaming says Blizzard has not explicitly addressed it and expects players to make a new character.

What is the level cap in WoW Forever?

Level 60. Warcraft Wiki describes the cap as 60 indefinitely, and Power Up Gaming calls it a strict level 60 cap.

Do my old Classic best-in-slot lists still work in WoW Forever?

Not reliably. Mein-MMO says items, stats, talents and racial skills were adjusted, so old lists no longer apply.

Are there flying mounts in WoW Forever?

No. Warcraft Wiki lists "No flying mounts, no level scaling, Azeroth remains dangerous" among the design pillars, and Power Up Gaming reports that Blizzard has said there never will be flying mounts.
