WoW Forever for Modern WoW Players: What Is Different and What Carries Over
World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) feels different from modern World of Warcraft: zones do not scale to your level, there is no flying, fights are slower, and the design favors community over automatic matchmaking. It does keep a modern interface, with Edit Mode, click casting and a Personal Resource Display, according to Gfinity's September 24, 2026 setup guide.
Quick answer: Bring your interface habits, not your pulling habits. The UI runs on Mainline's modern engine, while BoostRoom, relaying Blizzard statements, says there is no universal level scaling and combat is built around single, deliberate pulls, and Warcraft Wiki lists "No flying mounts, no level scaling" among the design pillars.

If you grew up on a modern zone where every enemy leans toward your level, the first week in Azeroth's old continents can feel like walking into a room that does not care about you. Here the land does not adjust itself to your sword, and the road is a road, not a conveyor belt.
Key facts
- Level scaling: none; BoostRoom says "There is no universal level scaling" (BoostRoom guide, September 14, 2026)
- Flying: no flying mounts (Warcraft Wiki, Power Up Gaming)
- Combat pace: slower and more tactical; a solo enemy takes roughly 10 to 15 seconds, per Blizzard as relayed by BoostRoom
- Interface: Mainline's modern UI engine and 12.1.5-era architecture (Gfinity)
- Edit Mode: opened with Esc, then Edit Mode, to drag, resize and snap interface elements; Gfinity says no third-party tools are needed to edit the UI
- Level cap: 60 (Warcraft Wiki)
- Grouping: by ruleset, with design favoring community over auto-matchmaking (Warcraft Wiki)
Is WoW Forever like modern WoW?
In the interface, yes. In the game, no. Warcraft Wiki describes WoW Forever as a standalone branch that draws on Classic, with a more grounded story, more crunchy systems and community building over auto-matchmaking. Gfinity's guide says the game uses Mainline's modern UI engine and API, so the screen should feel familiar even though the rules underneath are older. For the broader comparison, see the WoW Forever vs Classic guide and the what is WoW Forever guide.
Does WoW Forever have level scaling or flying?
Neither. BoostRoom's guide says there is no universal level scaling, so zones do not adjust to you, and that Forever has no flying-mount system built to let players skip large sections of the world. Warcraft Wiki lists "No flying mounts, no level scaling, Azeroth remains dangerous" among its design pillars. It adds that riding training is restructured, with more of the cost tied to the skill. Power Up Gaming reports that Blizzard has said there are and never will be flying mounts, though that is a secondhand report. The mounts guide and the travel guide cover getting around.
How is combat different from modern WoW?
Slower, and less forgiving of crowds. BoostRoom calls combat deliberately slower and more tactical than modern WoW, says Blizzard describes an ordinary solo enemy as taking roughly 10 to 15 seconds to defeat, and warns that pulling several enemies at once, as you might in modern zones, can be fatal. Mein-MMO's October 21 guide says hit rating and critical strike now apply automatically to spells and melee attacks. The beginners guide explains the early game.
Which interface features and addons carry over?
Gfinity says there are plenty of ways to edit the UI without downloading third-party tools, and that Edit Mode lets you drag, resize, snap and customize almost every interface element, including action bars, unit frames, raid frames and cooldown managers. It recommends Click Casting and Mouseover from the keybindings menu, and says the Personal Resource Display shows a health and resource bar above your model during combat. For addons, it says Classic-era addons will not load and must be rebuilt for the Forever and Mainline API, while addons for Midnight should port over easily; it adds that it is always best to double-check. See the addons guide and the UI setup guide.
How do you find groups when there is no automated matchmaking?
Through ruleset, faction and people. Warcraft Wiki describes an emphasis on community building over auto-matchmaking, and Warcraft Tavern reports that Blizzard's Familiar Faces system aims to match you with players you have met before. Horde and Alliance cannot group, and each ruleset has its own mega-realm. Read the guide to finding a group and the friends guide. The free Lore Forever add-on is a fan-made companion for zone and quest background.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether every modern interface feature, such as new frames or settings, is present at launch; Gfinity's guide dates from September 24, 2026.
- How addon compatibility holds up in practice; Gfinity advises double-checking.
- How the group-finding tools behave at launch; sources opened describe design aims, not final behavior.
- Any later-level combat tuning; the beta ended with a level 30 cap per Warcraft Tavern.
