WoW Forever Thousand Needles Guide: Levels, Freewind Post, Great Lift and Quests

Thousand Needles is a neutral, contested Kalimdor zone in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever); Warcraft Wiki lists Horde quests at levels 25 to 35, and mmonster lists the zone at 25 to 35. You reach it from the Barrens by the Great Lift, and Freewind Post is its only flight path.

Quick answer: Warcraft Wiki says Horde quests here begin around level 25, you reach the zone from the Barrens by the Great Lift, and Freewind Post has its only flight path. Freewind Post, Whitereach Post and Mirage Raceway are the quest hubs on Warcraft Wiki's quest page. The zone has no dungeon, and Forever Changes counts 69 quests here, six marked New and five Changed.

Thousand Needles in six stops: the Great Lift links the Barrens to the zone, Freewind Post has the only flight path, Whitereach Post and Mirage Raceway are quest hubs, the Weathered Nook gives the Test of Faith chain, and Shimmering Flats holds the zone's higher-level quests.

  • Flight path: Freewind Post is the only one. For the Horde it flies to Thunder Bluff, The Crossroads, Camp Taurajo, Camp Mojache and Gadgetzan. Alliance players use Thalanaar or Gadgetzan (Warcraft Wiki).

What level should you be?

Warcraft Wiki's quest page gives Horde quests at levels 25 to 35, and its Alliance listing starts at 27 and runs to 47, with a note to wait until level 30. mmonster lists the zone at 25 to 35 and puts its Horde route at 25 to 30, marked as played in the beta. Our Horde leveling zones guide cites games.gg for entering at 25 and leaving at 31 to 33, and Gamsgo for 20 to 30. The sources disagree by a few levels, so treat the range as a guide. The Alliance leveling zones guide covers the other side of the map.

How do you get in and out?

Warcraft Wiki sends Horde players south along the road to the Great Lift and down into Thousand Needles, so the usual route is from the Barrens. Read the Barrens guide first. Freewind Post's flight master, the zone's only one, reaches Thunder Bluff, The Crossroads, Camp Taurajo, Camp Mojache and Gadgetzan for the Horde. Alliance players use the Thalanaar or Gadgetzan flight paths instead, according to Warcraft Wiki. Past Thousand Needles, the zone borders Feralas and Tanaris. Thunder Bluff is covered in Thunder Bluff explained, and the Mulgore guide covers the plains behind it.

What are the Test of Faith quests?

Dorn Plainstalker at the Weathered Nook gives a chain of quests that Warcraft Wiki's quest page lists as Test of Faith (level 26), Test of Endurance (a group quest; the page's table gives both 29 and 30) and Test of Strength (30, group). Braug Dimspirit gives Test of Lore. Warcraft Wiki's Test of Strength page says it is a Horde quest at level 30 that requires level 25, in which you defeat Rok'Alim the Pounder, a level 30 rock elemental in the northwest, and loot Fragments of Rok'Alim. It calls it the third of ten quests in the Test of Faith chain, and says the quest was removed in patch 4.0.3a but remains in Classic. That page does not mention Forever, so check the quest in game before you plan a group around it.

Which Thousand Needles quests are new or changed in Forever?

Forever Changes' beta quest table (build 1.60.1.70532) counts 69 Thousand Needles quests; its page header gives levels 26 to 41, though the table runs from level 11 to 46. Six are marked New: Gnomes Win!, Goblins Win!, Packaged Pristine Pelts, Pristine Pesterhide Pelts, Stolen Freewind Supplies and Stop the Screeching. Five are marked Changed: Arikara, Test of Endurance, Test of Lore, Encrusted Tail Fins and Parts of the Swarm. Warcraft Wiki's quest page does not mention Forever, so treat these flags as beta data.

Which story is behind the zone?

Warcraft Wiki's zone page says the region was a river canyon before the Sundering, then thrust above the water table and filled with towering mesas. It describes tauren tribes with centaur patrolling the canyon floor, the Grimtotem Tribe as an enemy of the tauren, and goblins mining oil in the Scorched Basin. For the wider continent, read the travel guide. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background at each stop, and the optional Willo companion answers lore questions by voice.
